Following my earlier buying post, it looks like I have found a car. Thanks everyone for all the help and advice, also to Barry at TVR ecosse for the extra tips on what to look out for.

My insurance co are insisting the standard Meta alarm/immobiliser is not Thatcham Cat1 - can anyone confirm whether or not this is the case?

Cheers

As far as I can tell from what Carl Baker said to me - the standard fit alarm in TVRs was CAT1 approved - just not very well installed. biggrin

Kris,

The wording on the META M99T alarm card in my owners book is as follows:

This alarm system in conjunction with a previously fitted Category 2 immobiliser to obtain Category 1 status for the vehicle security system. If there is no Category 2 Thatcham listed immobiliser fitted along with the associated V.I.S.B. installation certificate, Category 1 status cannot be claimed on fitment of the alarm.

The immobiliser card shows a reference of META 36T

As you have both your insurer should recognise your system as Cat 1.

Who are you trying to insure with? So long as your mileage is limited to 5000 a year, you can use a classic policy. It requires no NCD, and goes by your driving experience. Couple of hunderd pounds a year.

There is an insurance wiki on here,
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

but a few names which keep coming up are:

Classic Line
Mannings

The M99T system (comprising of the M99T alarm control unit and M36T immobiliser along with GEC Plessey Mk4 microwave) was standard from 2nd January 1996 and the factory issued a 'to whom it may concern' letter confirming it is a Thatcham Cat 1 system but then states:

'As TVR use the microwave sensors to replace the ultrasonics, due to the nature of the vehicle, the system cannot be classified as thatcham cat 1 approved'

From cars after Aug 99 the letter confirmed the new Meta M99T2/M362T system fitted with a microwave in place of ultrasonics and bonnet/boot switches was now Cat 1:

It's through sky insurance as they'll match my NCD (and I have 11 points as a result of owning a Nissan GTR for a while...) classic line couldn't get close to their quote, not tried the other two though, will give them a bell.

Will give Carl a bell re the alarm situation too.

Cheers guys

Mine is, because it's November 1999 - but what about the earlier ones?
