Winter Jackets

Hi,

My old winter jackets are falling apart so its time to treat myself. I'm after a warm softshell that has an element of waterproofing so was considering a Gore Xenon SO or if I can find one, an Assos 851.

Does anyone have any experience of these items or any other recommendations.

I usually ride all through winter so it needs to be suitable for freezing temperatures.

Aldi may have some winter cycling jackets left. I bought one last week at £16 and used it on a chilly Scottish night run on Tuesday night and it was actually too warm. Outside temp was circa 7-8 degrees. They claim it is waterproof and windproof, but the waterproof part remains to be tested yet. For the money, it is an excellent buy. Certainly on a par with the Altura Synergy one I have and at a fraction of the cost.

If you're in the Assos/Gore price range I'd have to recommend the Rapha softshell, comfortable, good looking and performs faultlessly. Major thing for me is that it doesn't have the bulk that some jackets appears to have and fits more like a jersey than anything else.

I have the Assos. Toasty. Recent visit to Condor, I think I saw some kicking around in teh sale section.

Edit - Its not waterproof though!

Castelli Gabba and Gore Bike Wear Phantom 2.0 for me

The Gabba is race fit and the Gore allows some clothing underneath

Assos 851 jacket are still on sale at the outlet, or on ebay. I got one the other week, its a great bit of kit, race cut, very warm, and looks great. If you want waterproofing pack a race cape Nothing will keep you truly dry and breath, so don't try IMO.

I have the Xenon SO, and am more than happy with it.

Actually, I wore it for the first time in months for my lunch ride today and had forgotten just how toasty it is. Kept me warm enough at the Tour of Flanders Sportive this year too when I saw -5°C on my computer.
I wouldn't describe it as waterproof but it does a decent enough job of keeping a light shower out.

Only things I'd gripe at are that occasionally the underarm zips are difficult to adjust on the move and despite the silicone gripper at the back, it does sometimes need pulling back down. However that may be down to my Gibbon-like body...

The castelli Gabba is the most highly rated jacket.
The Rapha softshell is also supposed to be very good.
