Evening

Just had my 3 litre sport estate serviced today and was told that the discs had been badly fitted in the past, are now past it and need a full replacement.....

I'm waiting for a quote from the specialist for the work, but have been looking online to steel myself for the shock that lies ahead.

Option 1 Euro Car Parts:

Pagid discs and pads all round: £136.20 delivered

Option 2 EBC Brake Shop:

EBC discs and Redstuff pads all round: £264.33 delivered

I would assume that the EBC option would be the best, the specialist may want to stick to Jag parts and the Pagids are an unknown quantity, but some suggestions and experiences would be welcomed. I was thinking about refreshing the suspension, but that will now have to wait!

Pagid stuff is fine. If you gave me the choice over the two I would go for them even if the price was the same. with that price difference its a no-brainer.

I'd go with option 1, or better still, a full set of Mintex discs and pads for £96, including free delivery, from Ebay.

Pagid on my X-type 3.0. Perfectly good and got 1/3 off when ECP had one of their bonkers weekend deals smile

Sorry, don't know how to post up links to Ebay from this tablet, but if you type in 'x-type brakes' they're easy to find.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the Mintex and Pagid options.

Then again, I had an interesting drive in a BRZ today.....

Good question. They are a well-regarded Jag specialist so I took their word for it, but when you think about it....

Wrong end of the stick, apparently it was poorly fitted pads, which have damaged the discs.

So, £270 for genuine Jag parts and £340 labour from a specialist to fit them, or go for the Pagid option before it ends tonight!

Pagid and 2hrs labour if you've got the tools.

While you're at it give the handbrake mechanism a seriously good scrub and lube.

Pistons need winders - different direction each side. Cheap enough smile

To be fair the labour was including sorting out a probable sticking caliper, which would also cost £275 each if they needed replacing.....

I was planning on buying the Pagids then getting a local garage to fit them - I wouldn't trust myself with the brakes on the car my wife uses to ferry our (and other people's) kids around in all day.

What I really wanted was the cost to be so unbearable that I would just have to go out and buy a BRZ instead. Hey ho.

I hate to be rude, but I think they've seen you coming: a quick look on the web suggests that calipers are rather cheaper than that. You might want to talk to them forearmed with a few indicative prices.

I fully agree with your reticence to tinker with the brakes yourself, and would never encourage anyone to undertake a job about which they're not completely confident.
Not entirely, that's why I checked parts prices myself and asked you knowledgeable peeps.

The caliper price was ex vat too, hilariously.
