I appreciate the answers may be obvious but would welcome any fellow PH'er experiences in selling a private plate. In a nutshell my father is no longer with us and its time to move a plate on rather than just hang on to it. Its three numbers and then his name ROY - so assume there is some value

THe plate will be on a retention certificate soon and I know I could ebay / get some agency to buy if it for a silly price outright or possibly list it with an agency and potentially wait months for a sale.

Waiting is not an issue but like I say I would welcome any experiences from the PH forum on how best to value it, how best to sell it and who to avoid !!

For the avoidance of doubt I was really interested in peoples views - I really wasnt looking to start a 'sell your plate' debate or try and secure a sneaky sale in the forum

I sold mine through selectnumberplates.co.uk. Friendly and helpful. Took about 2 years (letters weren't anything special). It was up with NewReg too but although had one phone call from them it didn't go anywhere.

Simply put it's worth what someone will pay.

Reg Transfer etc will give a valuation but that's pretty worthless in itself.

As it's a popular name I'd just stick it on Ebay - you probably won't get quite as much as via a dealer but you can easily wait years that way.

Never having been involved or owned a "private reg", can I ask, if someone wants to buy the reg on my car, how do I go about selling him /her it. Is there forms with DVLA? How do I get anoher number on my car. And what are the fees?
Cheers
