My bonnet was 'keyed' a couple of months ago whilst parked on my drive overnight. The scratch was only about 8 inches long, but quite deep down to the white undercoat. I didn't report it as I thought there is nothing the police could do about it. In hindsight I should have spoken to each of the neighbours to see if they'd seen anything but I didn't.

Fast forward to today and I've found another scratch on my bonnet, only this time about 3 feet long. To say that I'm absolutely fking fuming would be an understatement. I only discovered it when I parked up at work, but it definitely happened overnight.

I live in a cul-de-sac, and the only logical reason someone would walk past my car would be to visit one of the 4 houses down our lane. There are no footpaths or rights of way. The neighbours are all reasonably friendly - we don't interact much but we always say hi. My only suspicion is one of the houses has a teenage son - he appears friendly enough and says hi, but he often has groups of mates popping round. I have absolutely no reason (or evidence) to suspect them - they've never caused any problems in the past - but the brain naturally looks for potential suspects I guess.

I've reported it to the local police who are going to get in touch. I'll be having a quick word with each of the neighbours just to see if they saw or heard anything, but beyond that what can I do?

After the initial scratch I did consider buying one of those mini cameras, which in hindsight would have been a great idea.

Why a mini camera, why not a normal sized camera with a flashing light? Even a dummy one. This would put the fkers off, whereas a a mini camera would not prevent them doing it again and if they are hoody wearing scum may not yield much in the way of an identity, and would still result in you having to fork out for a repair. I think prevention is better than cure.

A good excuse to post this thread from last weekend if you missed it.

Some nasty old fker keying somebody's car and being caught on camera.

I do feel for you, OP and I know how mad I'd go if I caught anybody doing it to my cars.

Good point, although my thinking was that if it were those teens visting the house then the camera would record someone doing the damage and if they didn't walk back out of the cul-de-sac immediately then it would be clear they've visited one of the 4 houses down the lane....rather than just recording a random passer by who then fled the scene.

Sorry to hear that - - your cul de sac sounds pretty safe (i.e doesnt sound like a neighbor would do it) could it of happened elsewhere?

The only placed I have parked in the last few days is in the secure work car park - I would have noticed that yesterday as I approach if from the front. Definitely happened on my drive last night.

Could be because it's an M135i...I know they're not deemed 'proper' M cars rofl

So you think it might be a disgruntled M3 driver?

Seriously though, how much is this damage costing you to repair? Did you get it sprayed the first time it happened?

I didn't bother getting the original scratch repaired, so at least I've not wasted any money there. If the same person is responsible for both scratches then I see no point in repairing it, only for it to happen again. I'm just going to have to put up with it I suppose.

Happened to me in a similar quiet cul-de-sac. 1st time our previous Range Rover had a couple of side panels done whilst parked outside the house. We weren't sure how long so didn't consider it was done in the Close.

6 months later our X5 was done on offside driver and rear door, neardsie front wing and door and bonnet. I'm pretty sure I know who did it but no proof.

Immediately put CCTV up and made a big thing of doing it. Fast forward 1 year and not 1 car has been touched since.

BiB were excellent. Sent forensic officer to take pictures and then a couple of officers came to interview us and then knocked on all neighbours doors to ask if anything had been seen. Shame that 1 cowardly tosser created so much work for an already undermanned and overstretched resource but they really were excellent.

The people that do this sort of thing are cowards and CCTV is just too much for their tiny brains.

I feel for you. I had my bonnet scratched and merc badge stolen earlier this week by a passing drunk who should really have been aborted.

Absolute scum. If they ever get caught its their face that will be getting keyed.

Frustrating. Have you made enemies with any kids before parking up? Eg scowling at them for not moving fast enough out of the way if they're playing football in the street? Or something like a loud sports exhaust?
