Used MkV GTI or new Fiesta ST?
Discussion
Hello everyone,
Newbie here with another `delicious` versus thread
So, I`m looking to get a new car and I would really appreciate some feedback from anyone who has driven both.
The thing is that altough I`ve driven GTIs in numerous occasions, I`ve yet to drive the Fiesta ST, as there are none available for test drives around where I live. (Romania)
The GTI I`m looking at is a 2008 Pirelli edition, with extras, decent mileage, full history, and a 6 month warranty for the engine and gearbox (pretty rare for this country). Link here: http://www.autovit.ro/volkswagen-gti-C28996223.htm...
My question is, if there`s anyone who tried both cars, will the Fiesta drive that much better than the Golf?
I tend to incline towards the GTI as the car will be used as a daily driver for both leisure and work duties, so it will probably look better in a customer`s parking lot than the slightly `boy-racer` Fiesta. (which will have to be black for the same reason)
Space in the back is not an issue as I will rarely travel with more than one passenger, but the difference is quite big imo.
As far as prices go, the Fiesta can be had for around 17k EUR here, in ST2 trim with extras like cruise control, heated seats and windshield (tough winters), style pack, etc.
In my mind the ownership costs will be quite similar, with pros and cons that pretty much even out for both cars.

I have not driven an ST but the wife has a new Fiesta Zetec and I have a Mk5 GTI. The Fiesta ST is generally the most highly rated of the current crop of smaller hot hatches. The Golf is more grown up and does feel bigger to drive, but still involving and handles well. Nicer interior too. The Pirelli has the same 230BHP as the Edition 30, and is highly tuneable if you want more. A desirable car - at that price I'd go for the Golf, but it is probably down to personal opinion.
I may be biased, having had (and just sold) a Golf Edition 30- but there's no contest- The Golf wins hands down every time for me. I think the Pirelli edition is even rarer than the Ed30; as others say- 230 BHP plus the ability to extract more power if necessary. The golf special editions should be pretty well equipped too, with plenty of room in the cabin.
Then there is the small matter of resale- you would lose a lot more on a new Fiesta over a used, limited edition Golf (for which there is a huge VW fanbase).

Thanks guys, I was just wondering how good the new Fiesta is to drive.
Depreciation for these kind of cars is huge here, so either way the car will be kept for long and then sold to a family member.
That`s why that Pirelli Golf has been for sale for about 6 months with no solid offers (I know the dealer), people are not interested in performance cars at all. If you aren`t selling a TDI car here then nobody`s interested.
Oh, and I bet no one will be able to tell a Pirelli Golf from a regular GTI come resale time

Fiesta ST, hands down.
I had a test drive in one last weekend to see what all the fuss was about after the wife recently got a new 1 litre Ecoboost. Seriously impressed (and tempted!), it has plenty of torque as standard but you can upgrade to the Mountune pack for around £700 which takes it to 215bhp and maintains the Ford warranty.
As a driving experience the ST sounds far better than the Golf, and by FAR the more involving and rewarding car to make progress in. I've had a go in a Mk6 Golf GTi previously and was underwhelmed to say the least by the lack of driver feedback. The pedals and steering both felt dead and too light, and the car was very refined to the point where there is very little sensation of speed.
As a result the Golf is of course more comfortable, but if you enjoy driving then the ST is better and cheaper. The only thing that lets the ST down is the lack of Auto lights even as an option, but I'm being picky.
I'd genuinely rate it as the best new car of 2013, and for £17k no new car even comes close.
Oh, and the back end is very lively

forget both of these....get the 208 GTI....it's really good. Seriously.
I had a sit in one of these at Goodwood and my initial thought was 'WTF were Peugeot thinking?'The top of the steering wheel was directly in line with the dials. I tried a few different positions but I either still couldn't see the rev counter and speedo, or I was uncomfortable as the steering was down in my knees.
I'm not exactly an odd size either at 6ft slim build. I normally have the seat at the lowest setting, knees with a good bend when extended, ability to touch the top of the wheel with a good bend in my arm and the back relatively upright. But I just really struggled with the 208, enough to completely put me off.
I can see where you're coming from but did you drive it? I'll be honest, it's a hoot....really addictive power delivery, great handling and I think it looks the canine's undercarriage.
I like the Fiesta but i'm just not as sold as the other reviewers. The new Focus ST however, pure bliss!
