Wanting to SORN my car for the winter, I emailed Bewiser, my insurer, to ask what they needed from me.
I was told that your cant do that and that I have to have a min of 3rd party.

I emailed a few more times explaining very openly that the car will be SORNED and in a locked secure garage attached to my house and I wanted fire n theft ONLY.
Well their last letter to me was:-

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your email,
We can confirm that by UK laws if your vehicle is taxed it must hold a minimum of third party only insurance cover. The purpose of Motor Insurance is to cover any innocent third party that may receive damage.

There is no Insurance policies in the UK that provide cover for your vehicle only and does not cover third parties.

If your vehicle is going to be SORN you do not legally have to hold Insurance cover however, if your vehicle is stolen or damaged you will not have cover for this.
Please be advised that the above facts are correct in accordance with UK laws. The only cover available in the UK is third party only, third party fire and theft or comprehensive.
If you would like to discuss this matter further or request any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards

Now, yes what she has said in some parts is correct but she has failed to put, SORN/locked garage/not being driven/Fire and theft together, as I asked several times.
Bewiser have now told me that they do not offer a fire and theft policy.

So if I believed what they said, being a trustful guy, I could be several hundreds of pounds out of pocket...........mmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I don't think I've ever heard of a fire and theft, but without 3rd party policy.

And let's face it, you want 3rd party as that's the real cost risk. Some one steals your SORNed car and does £1m of medical injuries to someone in a crash?

Op you are not really making any sense. Any hoo the part of the email that refers to insures not offering fire and theft only, isn't true. track day cars can be insured for travel to and from events, fire and theft and all sorts of other things without 3rd party. Bare in mind a track day car can be fully road legal I don't see wy you couldn't put a Nissan sunny or any thing else on one of these policies if you wanted to.

Your insurance would not cover a thief.

I've insured a car for just fire an theft, but this was about 20 years ago. I was in the navy, and was going to be away for 6 months. I wanted the car insured while in a locked garage, but not for the road. My insurance company were fine with is, and the cost was minimal.

As you don't need insurance on a car parked on private land, then you can legally insure it however you want to.

Thats what I wanted to do, just fire and theft, but instead of Bewiser just telling me they dont offer that, they said that you cannot get just F & T insurance and that is was illegal to do so. It took all of 10 secs on google to fin several insurance companies that do offer it.
So naturally I cancelled my insurance policy with them!

I really can't believe that statement. How do you think many hundreds (thousands?) of 'track-day-only' cars are insured? How long have you been a motoring enthusiast?

Google: Laid up insurance

You'll see plenty of firms who offer it.

There are insurance companies that will insure for just fire/theft.

Just the other day I was speaking to flux about a policy for fire/theft without road risk. Was with equity red star and cost of £100 for £10K kitcar.

Footman James a few years ago gave me a policy for around the same price but including in transit damage/theft. And even theft/damage from a pit lane of a official race track.

I've had this as well on a car I didnt use for a couple of years. Mine was through Footman James, cost about £30/yr. Check whether there'd be a cancellation on any existing contract

Yep, I do this through Adrian Flux for my Capri. Just in case it gets nicked for scrap or I set the garage alight while welding!

What does it do to liability?

E.g. Thief steals SORNd, laid up car, causes accident, damage to other parties?

Is this covered by the theft element or does that just cover the car itself?

If you have insurance and a thief steals your car and hits something I was under the impression your insurance had a legal obligation to pay for the other damage, (then maybe claim it back of the thief).
What would happen if he nicked an uninsured car (off private land) and crashed it, does it fall to you to pay for the third party damage.

It's called "Laid Up" insurance.

Yes, a consultant has given you duff info. It happens. Ignore it. Use someone else next time, or if you're really bothered, send them links to other companies advertising laid up cover to make your point.

Does it not come under the house insurance or does that not include the garage?
