I have an E92 M3 currently and was going to update it but decided to wait and see what the new M3/4 was in reality.
Now it seems we are pretty close to final specs I'm not convinced it is for me.
A big step forwards clearly, emissions etc take their toll, but I will miss the NA V8.
So, if I am to take the plunge into a playstation engine then why would I get the M3/4 over say a GT-R?
And by the way - when I do swap next I will not need 4 adult seats which is a big change in requirements I know!
Again, this is all about me and my specific needs and requirements - I am not saying the new M3/4 is not a fantastic and rewarding car.

The V8 in the E92 M3 is the best bit & it is truly a masterpiece but the next M3/M4 will be lighter have more torque & offer better economy if that matters & epic tuning potential, I can see it wiping the floor with the E92 & I can't wait!
What you have to remember is the E92 M3 wasn't rated at launch so surely they can't get it wrong twice can they?
If I had the money I wouldn't hesitate in swapping for the next one the E92 will be old hat & old tech but in saying that everyone loves the E30 the best so I suppose it's each to their own.

Personally GTR doesn't appeal for a long term proposition, although a short term affair might be interesting. Downside of course is that short term affirs are normally expensive!
One thing that GTR offers that I find appealing is 4wd, and I wonder if at some stage M will offer a 4wd option as well as 2wd.
I love the M6 Gran Coupe but there is no denying that like my M5 it is a big car and is heavy.
I won't need such a large car in a year or so, so my perfect solution would be a 4wd M4 Gran Coupe, particularly if the interior were as good as the M6 with full leather.

Hi,
It's one of those things, there's no straight answer for the the latest M3/M4 and a GTR. I think I read somewhere in one of the forthcoming car's features that the next GTR will be made to try and accomplish the 0-62 run in a mere 2 seconds!
So, perhaps if what you want is more of a ballistic missile type car, then consider the GTR. If you want a car that's more of an all rounder consider the M3/M4. Other aspects will come into it of course, insurance, maintenence costs, fuel costs, then the elements such as driveability, handling and the overall feel of the car.
Chances of the new M3/M4 being an excellent car, even if it gets off to a slower start are high, it's not like the M division don't know what they're doing! The N/A aspect over the next few years will quieten down and only a smaller element of driving enthusiasts will still be complaining about it. I'd rather BMW stay in business than stick with N/A and begin to lose out to faster rivals from the likes of Audi and Merc etc!
Cheers, Dennis!

Well you're not going to know the answer until mid 2014 when you are able to get a test drive, and the GTR will be running an extra 100bhp plus 4WD so they're quite different. The GTR will also be almost 7 years old next year too and the interior on the M4 will almost certainly be a much nicer place to sit.
From a 'pain in the neck' point of view, I would certainly find the 6 monthly servicing of the GTR frustrating. I would expect the new M4 to require half the number of services. Add in 20 inch wheels that will pinch tyres along cracked B-roads and owners reviews stating that it's not terribly rewarding to drive and I found the GTR took itself off of my list pretty quickly.

As far as I know it was only the early GT-R's that required 6 month interval servicing. It soon became yearly. Speaking as the ex-owner of an M3 DCT, a 997 C2 and 997 Turbo, and someone with an order in for an M4, I'm looking forward to the new car.
I drove a GT-R recently before placing the (refundable) deposit and yes, it's very fast but it is utterly uninvolving, rides too high, rides too hard, ugly as sin and build quality has nothing on BMW or Porsche. It was a fun 40 minute test drive, but when I got out of it I was left cold. Great car, - but I think you're either a GT-R guy or you're not ... so my advice would be to go and drive it.

BMW so far has got every other generation of the M3 right...
E30 and E46 seen as the high points with the E36 and E92 less so....It's time for another cracker.
I personally think in ten years time we'll look back at cars like the E92 (and others of a similar vintage)and think how bloody heavy they were. Weight saving is where it's at and that's good news if you like going round corners...not just for economy.

Will it? It's the same as the f30/2 which isn't that cars strong point if you ask me, the interior of the new M3/4 is the biggest issue for me too much 1 series and not enough 5/6 going on. Latest spy pic doesn't inspire my confidence....

Had a MY10 GT-R for just over a year (naturally had a fettling session so soon became an SVM 650R) & they're a car that any petrolhead should at least own for a period of time.
It's epic how well they perform & don't believe all this BS about Playstation drive/feel as the car although forgiving, demands plenty of respect & control. They're far from perfect as to get Supercar beating levels of performance, Nissan didn't have much money left for the luxuries such as sound proofing & the use of quality cabin materials, however when you drive one this kind of goes to the back of your mind.
I loved mine & although i don't regret selling it in favour of a touch more comfort, i certainly don't regret owning it & if funds allowed i'd have one as a weekend/track monster in a heartbeat.
