Looks like after five years of largely trouble-free ownership, the Chim has rewarded me by needing the outriggers done. But only at the back apparently.

After doing a small panicface and squealing 'Ohmygod I'm going to sell it', Dan at the fantastic Taylor TVR convinced me that considering how good the car was otherwise, it was worth getting the outriggers done properly.

So £2K bill for me next April. Oh well.

Sorry, not being clear. £2K is for the whole shebang, not just the back.

Does Dan replace the outriggers himself or 'farm' it out?

Give Mike Vernon a call, he is based in the old TVR Factory, 07717878292, he is ex TVR staff and did the outriggers on mine. Well pleased.

I think 2k for having outriggers done is a good price imo. I'm having the outriggers on my Chimaera replaced for 2.6k with a TVR specialist, my car was in for a routine 12k service when the outriggers were discovered!

Personally I think that is a bit pricey. You can get a full body off total chassis refurb for £3600. Proper job. Or just the outriggers for £1800.

^^ This. I paid £3,600 for a body off total refurb: chassis stripped down to bits that look like sections out of the Forth Bridge, outriggers cut out and replaced, a couple of other bits patched, everything shot blasted, zinc primered and powder coated. Then all the re-assembly, plus a few other jobs that needed doing. It was four or five weeks' work. Admittedly that was 3 years ago now.

the specialist said that the body needed to come off to get at the chassis, I tried to get them reduce the price as they were doing a load of other jobs too but they were'nt having it. The seat belt mounts needed to be done too as they were coming away from the chassis! £3600 seems a fair price for a complete refurb.

Dr. Mike was twice the price! How come? Have done a read again. Now better understood.

Willow have removed the prices from their website recently. They used to be £1800 inc VAT (£1500 plus VAT) for a body off outrigger job. The advantage of that is that they and you get to see if other/more work is required, so you can get it done at the same time. Makes sense. However, all they do for the £1800 is the outriggers.

They also used to quote £3600 for the full body off chassis refurb (plus any other parts such as suspension bits). Guess you need to phone them now for a quote. They are very good at what they do, and have a waiting list.

Mat Smith (Downham Market) is basically the same price for both of those, but also does a body lift outrigger replacement job for £1500 if you are more confident about your chassis, or are only able to afford the minimum. He did mine like that at Easter, as I had just paid for an engine upgrade and was gutted to fail the MOT on outriggers, and made a very nice job of it. He could probably do it sooner. He is also very good at the mechanical side of things.

Whoever you choose, you will be leaving your car there a few weeks, so just factor in the train fare home - Willow are on the East Coast mainline to London, Mat is on the main line from Kings Lynn to London. Both are within a mile of their respective stations.

I'm in Essex so can't really look at anywhere that's not reasonably close unfortunately. Even if the price is a couple of hundred quid cheaper, I just don't have the time to drive to the other end of the country and get the train back.

Good point - it would take me a whole hour and 25 minutes to get back to Kings Cross from Willow, same from Mat Smith.

But you are right - it does add to the cost. When I had my alarm changed by Carl Baker, his £550 cost had 350 miles petrol added to it by the time he had finished. There was no choice with that job however.

You make a perfectly fair point, I just couldn't leave the impression that Newark and Downham Market, while north of Watford, were north of the arctic circle too..... laugh

Um. OK. Unfortunately, I don't know where every single TVR specialist in the UK is and my comment was more directed at whoever it was that suggested Blackpool. Glad you found it amusing though.

OP,

I can do Grays to Newark (Willow Sports Cars) in 2 hours and if I book a return rail ticket 2 weeks or more in advance and travel out of rush hour the cost comes in at under £40. Factor in a full tank of fuel to cover journey there and back (possibly a bit more) and the journey could be cost effective to some of the specialists out of our area.
