Ok so my intention is to go with either LED or HID headlights, rather than the standard filament type.

Question is, what are the dimensions of the Ultima's standard high and low beam units?

Hopefully I can then source new LED projector versions the right size. If this fails it'll be down the HID route (and use filament for the IVA etc).

Alternatively if anyone has already succeeded in fitting different units, kindly link.

Thanks

I'd swap out for MOT eventually if LED doesn't materialize. Aware of the issues washers/leveling etc.

Found some on CBS so far... Complete units and 100 notes more than standard versions.

Looking at the photo of the headlight unit which came with my order, it looks like they are sourced by this manufacturer (Turkish): http://ayfar.com/en/Anasayfa

Care to share the info (I'm a bit lazy to look through the catalogue....)?
In what vehicle is it used and is there a HID option?

My Lotus has passed every year without any self leveling etc...as do a lot of other cars with aftermarket HID's - no idea what the law is though.

No problem, I'll link when I get to a computer. The LED projectors are individual high and low units and appear to be 26mm shorter, so they shouldn't be too much hassle.

Not found HID options yet but still looking. It's not like I need them now, just seeing what's available before the time comes.

I seem to recall that looking at the std wiring is the first step, to ensure no current drop to the units. I have my headlights on separate relays (there is no load running thru' my ignition at all) and am using the std headlights. I've only done a few night runs, but I was impressed how good the lights were and certainly have no need to upgrade them. It might be worth doing this as a first step and then seeing if you need to do anything else. how much night driving are you planning on doing in the Ult??

Standard wiring will just give a signal to the seperate relays as you have done. I've made this for a few older cars before to not hack the original loom but vastly improve the lighting.

I plan on going to Le Mans 2015, driving over night and many other long distance excursions so it's desirable for me. Never really used projector lights before but want to keep the original look of Ultima.

Any photos of your headlights at night handy?

It was 18mths ago I made the updates to the loom, but from memory the ign switch carries a lot of load and it impacts the lights.... this is what I've cut out. If you do a forum search on headlight quality, you should see some more discussion on modd'ing the loom / ign switch to give the lights a bit of a boost.

From the night driving I've done thus far, I've got no issues with the std lights themselves and as a Le Mans visitor myself, I'd have no problems going there at night with the car. Sure they're not upto the factory HIDs in my daily driver, but they are 100x better than my Ariel Atom was, which was a very pleasant surprise!! I don't know when the UK weather is going to buck up but it's rained for 5 days where I live, so the Can Am is tucked up warm & dry! If I can get it out anytime soon, I'll take it down the lane and do a pic or two for you.

That's the thing, having owned a new factory vehicle with bi-xenons and the like, it just means older car headlights never seem as good. Fitted a relayed HID kit to my little mk2 golf I drove to the 24hrs this year and it was amazing the difference from the previous year. All because of vw overloading the ignition switch...

Appreciate your can-am pics if you get a window. Off to search for that other thread now. Thanks.
