Disco 2 facelift difflock
Discussion
Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a disco 2 but want a manual difflock as I had in my 300tdi. I know the early disco 2's had it removed in favour of the traction control system (although most of the mechanism is there, just not connected).
On the early disco 2's I've seen, there is a sticker just forward of the high/low ratio lever explaining how/what speeds to operate it at. On the facelift version it has the same gear knob (marked high/neutral/low), but a different sticker showing difflock as well. This suggests that these vehicles have the manual difflock.
Does anybody know if this is the case? Do all facelift disco 2's have a manual difflock?
Kind Regards,
Doggydog33

Have a read through this:

and this:

You need to check the top of the transfer box as shown.

Recently retrofitted a discovery 1 diff lock linkage to the wifes 2000 discovery td5. Works a treat and a damn sight cheaper than the Ashcroft linkage.
Standard linkage.

Discovery 1 linkage fitted.

Some early pre-facelift D2s like mine have the difflock fitted but no linkage (LR using up old gearbox stock).
As far as I know the only physical way to check is under the car. On the gearbox casing above where the front prop shaft comes out of the differential there will be a small shaft sticking out with two flats on it if there is a diff lock fitted. Turning this 90 degrees anti-clockwise will lock the diff and illuminate the "diff locked" light on the dash.
Standard linkage.

Thanks Paintman,
I was hoping there was a way from just looking inside a vehicle to identify which ones have/haven't got the manual difflock. When phoning about cars, most owners don't know if there's has or hasn't got it.

I've been tempted to go down the 300tdi linkage route on my 1999 TD5, is it an easy swap, my plan was to pick up a cheap transfer box off eBay.Some early pre-facelift D2s like mine have the difflock fitted but no linkage (LR using up old gearbox stock).

I believe that 2002/03 year facelifts do not have any of the diff lock gubbins. Pre and post this period the gubbins is there and you just need to fit a lever. I have a late 2002 and the transfer box does not have a diff lock connection.
I've read all sorts. I've heard this ^^, that the difflock was removed late 2000 and reintroduced with the facelift and that it was removed in 2000 and never re-introduced. I suspect the only way to be sure is to get underneath and feel for the stub.300bhp/ton,
I know most of the time I won't need for most of the 'off roading' I do, however a mate of mine has access to some farm land with a bomb hole in it. My 300tdi needed diff lock engaged to get up some of the climbs and I'd like to know any vehicle i purchase has the same ability as the 300tdi.
I've heard good and bad about the T/C system on the TD5, I was just hoping to avoid buying a vehicle and then spending another £300(?) fitting a manual diff lock.

You 300Tdi didn't have TCS though. So yes it would have needed the diff lock engaged off road. Else you'll effectively end up with one wheel drive.I know most of the time I won't need for most of the 'off roading' I do, however a mate of mine has access to some farm land with a bomb hole in it. The TCS on the D2 works by braking individual wheels to stop them spinning and to generate load on the engine, this in turn will make the stationary wheels turn.
So if for example both front wheels are spinning, then it'd brake both of them, forcing the open diff centre diff to transmit power to the rear and make them turn. With difflock the front and rear shafts would be spinning together already.
I will be honest and say having difflock it good. But the TCS on a D2 should be more than capable on most off road situations and it will generally match a non TCS but difflocked vehicle.
The only downsides to the TCS is the fact that it needs slippage, i.e. wheelspin to actually work. So it's a slightly different driving style and some terrain such as rock crawls mean you'll have to spin the wheels to make it work, which might not be the best approach.
But just your normal mud, grass and ruts terrain found in many UK fields and greenlanes, it should be perfectly fine.
The other downside is brake wear. As obviously lots of off roading and lots of wheelspinning and TCS use will heat and wear the brakes out quicker.
If you can get a D2 with the difflock parts, then do so. Ultimately it is better. But I wouldn't make it a deal breaker if you are only an occasional off roader. At the end of the day getting difflock on a D2 isn't the hardest thing, even if you buy a new transfer box off ebay to swap on.

As said in that "how to", make sure you get ALL the bits of the linkage or preferably remove it from the donor yourself so you see how it all fits together. You also need the discovery 1 gear stick as its base plate incorporates the mount for the diff linkage (seen in my pics further up the page).
