Engine mods anybody?
Discussion
Has anyone on here tweaked/tunned the original 2.9 engine in the 'S'? Better heads and Cam along with the ECU/injection.
Found this website (link below) which do all the parts necessary however interested if anyone has gone ahead with it.
Regards.

Lifted straight from the Burton power website by the looks of it ???

I could be wrong but i understand it will cost quite a lot to get near 200 bhp.
I did however talk to a chap once who had his heads skimmed a little to up the compression while they were off he claimed it had made quite a difference.
Is your engine running well ? I have also had reports that a session a Austech (?? ) can make a big difference with them just setting the engine up correctly.
Or drop a cossie lump in..
Or be the first to drop the 4.0 explorer cologne in bags of torque.
Cheers

My heads have ported exhausts and 20 thou skimmed, along with the free flowing exhaust I noticed it has more bottom end grunt. I am going to look at a tuned engine next weekend, skimmed heads at 25 thou`, inlet and exhaust ported, wild cam, new bearings top and bottom and new rings, lightened and balanced flywheel. I know the guy and he claims 210 with the set up, we will have to see

Thanks for the replies, I gathered from the lack of folks tuning the 2.9 it would probably be down to costs, I want to use the original engine. I have emailed some companies to get a clearer picture of costs. She is running well with good oil pressure, no smoking, pulling as she should just could do with some 'extra grunt' I feel.
Road Tax expiring end of this month so thinking of taking off the road for the winter and getting the engine tweaked, will look into it.

Sounds fun! Keep informed please.
Cheers.
from what I've read the 2.9s "weak link" is the induction, basically, it struggles to breath.
Personally I wouldn't go too wild with the cam for an "every day" road engine (nor take too much off the heads).
Maybe a Piper 270 would be a good choice
The "cat" engines may be a little better without the restriction of the air flow meters and associated plumbing? And of course the Cosworth solves the problem with four valves per cylinder and a complete re-design of the inlet manifold, plenum etc.
If you're struggling to suck enough air in you could always give it a bit of assistance with a turbo or supercharger
I like the idea of a modern ignition system, coil packs, no distributor, programmable ECU but while it would be an interesting project I reckon cost would far out weigh any gains?
Boring but obvious answer is make sure what you have is working properly before looking at "tuning", Austec Racing had a guy (Paul?) who knew how to set up a Cologne, I've heard they have been through some changes, hopefully he is still there?
ETA old but interesting thread...... old thread

how about a completely different route!!!!!
Change the diff ratio ( maybe go lsd too) I've gone from the standard 3.64 wich theoretically gives a top speed around 170 ish to a 4.2 which brings it to an acceptable 140.
Also look at different internals to the Type 9 box (TranX /Quaife etc.) to give you the necessary ratios (wish I'd done that rather than the MT75 I've done}.

Change the diff ratio
70ish in fifth I'm looking for "another gear" and first is so low (low enough to get a fully laden Sierra moving on a steep gradient... with a caravan on the back) that I have fitted a "long (ie higher) first gear kit".Change the diff ratio
Perhaps too used to driving a diesel that's barely ticking over at 70?
Now, may be a higher final drive ratio

I remember Lee taking me out for a spin in that many years ago, flying round the back roads of Epping making a right racket. http://www.pistonheads.com/tvr/s/default.asp?story...
