If you had up to £50k to buy one brand new car which would be your only car and it had to last the rest of your lifetime, what would you be considering?

Depends on how long you expect to live or drive. I suspect the Queen would buy one of the last Defenderssmile

Probably a proper Range Rover.

The one car thing's always tricky for me, as I like to do various sports and need a roof rack, tow bar, flat folding rear seats etc; however I also love driving so need a car to be as low and light as possible; so I've always run two cars for that reason. My 'must haves' are rear wheel drive, a manual gearbox, a decent driving position, and linear controls with a natural action to them (no lag!). A low CofG is also a must, so no Weeble like off roaders for me! As boring as it sounds, the only car I can think of that does all that would be a BMW 1 or 3 series. Most other cars are way too tall and wobbly.

I'm struggling at that budget, to be honest.
Needs to be a sports car, and they're expensive new. frown

Anything that you really, really want for life can last a lifetime. Cars deteriorate not because they have to, but because we lose interest and are already thinking about the next bigger/better/faster one.

Probably not unlike marriage/relationships, then. smile

A nice Jag

or a top of the range V70 with 4 wheel drive, so you can rag it when you want, go out smart when you want, go to the dump with it loaded to the roof with cr1p, and when you get old buy a caravan and tow something with it!

5 series BMW's look like they will go on forever too

Biggest possible petrol engined 3 series touring.

With loads of buttons and things that move electrically.

That'd do me.

I'd buy something that has already lasted 20+ years. But I wouldn't spend £50k on just one car anyway.

The OP says it has to last the rest of your life. Imagine the bills running a 50 year old Range Rover wobble

£50k? More like 2 or 3k top whack.

Late 90s Volvo - max toughness, superlative build quality and the minimum of stuff to go wrong.

There's a lot of old Rangies on the road. Anyway, I've got lots of money smile
