Is there anywhere that does such a thing?
Might be off on a bit of a trip and don't fancy strapping a 5m canoe directly to the roof of the Audi, need something sturdy to cover 1000+ miles that means I don't need to creep along at 50mph.

anyone know of anywhere to rent such items?

I've got a couple of sets of decent Thule bars. What's the Audi? Estate or saloon? Do you have roof rails?

I have a set that fitted my Audi S4 estate, so if yours is an estate, it should fit.

I've got a whole load of cross bars you can borrow. Bound to be something amongst them that fits.

I've got a pair of 'soft racks' for my surf boards (they are doubles so can carry 4 boards with ease and don't need to creep down the motorway). Probably not ideal for canoe but still recommend a purchase as can use for transporting other items.

Quick google search ...

I just found a rather good local shop that may satisfy a soft rack requirement or definitely worth a browse for canoe and other marine equipment!

Hope this helps

Thanks Guys, I can get the soft ones locally no bother but for over 1k miles I don't want soft ones on the roof, a bit of crap gets under there and the paint is shot, plus I've heard, and saw at the weekend, that a strap that goes though the doors allows water to come inside the car, no problem just down the road but for hours on end that could end up irritating.
I'm going to pop over and see what Paul has, and failing that I've found a place that rents them for £30 for 10 days.

I've got a pair of VW ones if you want to use them? They fit on my Bora but not sure if they'd fit yours or not? Can't see anything on Google that would say either way unfortunately, but you're more than welcome to try them.

Thanks John, looks like maybe you and Paul are in the same area so perhaps if there was an evening you are both free I could do a trip over that way?

Paul, John, I'm sending my grateful thanks for your offers.
However, it looks like I am not going to be around any evening before I go away, and I spent a while in Halfords today looking, and it seems that as mine is a recent-ish car only Thule make them and the clamp that attaches them to the roof/gutter/door bit is a bit unique and special order only.
Also if things work out then I may need them for more than a one-off trip so a quick Google has sourced me some new ones - not cheap, but £50 less than Halfords and delivered in a day or so. Also interchangeable clamps so only need to change one piece when I change the car.

Of course I can buy Audi originals at a price but then not interchangeable if I buy a different brand.

So thanks again chaps - love the power of PH smile

OK so to throw some light on all these random posts.

Roof bars are for a road trip to Hungary to pick up a canoe. A friend is a water-sports instructor and has been tentatively offered a place in the Olympic team, so wants his favourite canoe back, plus we will be doing a bit of canoeing down the Danube.

Van is for some paddleboards, he has also been invited out to Nicaragua for the world championships next year. I need to start exercising to get my shoulder working again so he is going to train me, and there are lots of competitions so a kitted out van would make a better bet than loaded cars.

Darren has so many Jags that end of the Island is subsiding so again a canoe or paddle board will be very useful. I did hear he left the engine running on one and the CO2 emissions actually caused the Tornado this morning. I am in fact just preparing myself - you all know the cover of the movie Day after Tomorrow?

Lets straighten this out,,,,,,

34 cylinders, 20.2 ltrs and 1594 bhp is not enough to cause a tornado, however throw in the 4 cyl, 1.6 and 115 bhp of the Mazda and it may just have tipped the scalesbiggrin
