Crashes, scraped wheels, bewildered motorists and frayed tempers - it can only be another traffic "calming" scheme.

London's latest startling road improvement - at Ebury Bridge in Chelsea - has caused accidents, long delays and anger among drivers since it opened last week.

One cabbie said: "It is one of the craziest schemes we have seen." But if transport chiefs like it, and so far they do, there could soon be one near you too.

It works like a chicane on a racetrack and slows cars in both directions on this crucial junction used by hundreds of commuters at rushhour. The aim is to divert cars into the middle of the road, allowing buses to continue straight on.

Reason #87 why I can't be arsed going anywhere near London anymore...

Has anyone got a big Grey van with flashers on top, an air hammer and a load of tarmac.... qucik half days work to dig it up again and get the traffic flowing..

Question for plod..... do you ever know where roadworks are going on and can you tell whether they are "legal" or not??

Ahh but I bet the average speed through the area has dropped from 28mph to 27mph so the council should be congratulated because speed kills!!

Local council justified it becoz it keeps "extra wide" vehicles from using the bridge. You must have seen all those extra wide vehicles joy riding through Westminster? I'll sleep sounder knowing they've been kept south of the river.
