A fun, PH friendly, reliable daily car?

Having difficulty deciding what to get. Iv owned my Suzuki for nearly two years now, spent a fair amount on modifications.

I'm just getting to that stage I just want a decent car that comes with a good performance record.

Only problem is I do roughly over 13k miles a year and sick of putting so much miles on a little car.

Iv got 4 years ncb, Iv got about £7-8k to spend on my next car. And about £600-700 for insurance.

I've looking at mk1 mx5 but as-usual I'd tempted to fettle with it.

Other possibilities are:
mk5 Golf Gti
mk4 Golf R32 (not sure what insurance would be like)
H Astra VXR
Ford Focus St
Skoda Fabia VRs?

A tidy Impreza STI? Very comfortable and obviously has the pace to go with it. Frugal too if you're in the mood.

With your requirements I'd be looking at something Japanese, normally aspirated, but a little bit different.

Talking about £1300 on insurance for that, for a standard one. I'd love one kitted out with prodrive goodies!

I've heard Imprezas called manny things, 'frugal' was never one of them!


How about Mazda 3MPS? you'd get more for your hard earned than the VAG equivalent.

I have the Fabia vrs and I love it. It's quite pocket friendly, although a few things have been done recently. But apart from general wear and tear its been great! Up to 108k now and still pulling like a train and surprising many bigger more powerful cars. Oh and it'll do 60mpg on a long run I'm 20 and insurance is 700 ish

The VRs is the main contender purely because of the diesel, think it will work out cheaper for me, especially with the cheaper road tax.

Just want to wait for a black one to pop up Not too keen on the silver.

You'd be surprised. Give Greenlight a call and see. I pay £400 on 20k a year on a modified Blobeye with business insurance for 10k miles. Worth a look

Mk4 R32 is a good call - I had one for a year and while the power isn't all that much for a 3.2 six pot, it's a very revvy lump with cracking throttle response and an epic sound track.

Just make sure you either live somewhere "safe" or have a good garage - I had to sell mine after too much thief attention.

If you're liking the idea of the VRS as it's diesel, I was tempted to get a Toyota Auris T180 earlier in the year (ended up with a Golf GT TDI as it came along before I found an Auris). I don't know what they are like but I test drove a normal 2.0 Auris and thought it was nice. I like the idea that it's the top model they do so you won't seem such a tight arse for owning a diesel.

Yeah fair comment, I'd be the same! I consider 60k to be massive mileage :P

Pffft my DC5 is on 111k and going strong, doesn't use any oil at all. Has regular servicing. Has been a peach for 5 years!

Is 70-80k really high mileage? If you honestly think so, then you'll potentially limit your choices a lot.
