In my quest to find a reliable motorway muncher for my 150 round trip commute I stumbled on this....never had a Merc and I have been looking at Saabs/Volvos until I spotted this.

As a mile muncher, it'll be great. That year of that E is good as they had started to get the quality right again. Downsides to that one.....No Heated Seats, No Command. BIG negatives if you want to resell.
Personally I think its overpriced for its spec, regardless of miles.
I would look for a car with higher spec even if it means higher miles but same price. So many to choose from, why not get some toys!
Only my opinion though

Disagree with the above.

you want to avoid E Class in this age bracket - manufacturer dates between 2003-06 had poor quality E Class production and the model was face lifted in late 2006 as a result. Earliest you want to buy is a Sept on 2006 model showing facelift differences - louvred headlights, more pronounced front grille.

heated seats and COMAND are very uncommon also - what you must get to avoid a resale nightmare are leather seats.

Thanks chaps. Two differing views but both appreciated. My main thinking was that as I would be doing 25/30k PA in miles it would still be average miles after a year or two.

May take a test drive.

you're welcome - I'd advise looking into reviews on honest john, auto trader etc, which will back up what I said.

my dad has a 54 plate with the old engine. its been brilliant. the only problems have been broken rear coil springs and a failed comand unit screen. both repaired for less than 300 gbp each.

there was a definate leap in quality in 04 so this should be fine. the less toys the less to go wrong.

The leap in quality and reliability came in late 2006 models with the facelift, see - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mercedes-be...

Your dad is lucky to have a solid one.

Could be a trick of the light, but to me it looks like the front wing and drivers door are different colours??
