How many pins does a monitor plug need?

now my old monitors d-plug had 11, where as my new one has 15, but doesnt work - so is that pin related?

Probably not pin related. Some pins aren't used, so they are sometimes left off.

It may be probable that if you current monitor is older then the refresh rate you run your video card at may be too high for it.

my replacement monitor is newer than the previous one, an that worked ok till last month.
