My Yamaha DSP A1 seems to have finally given up the ghost. Sometimes its really quiet, sometimes it has an echo and sometimes I can make it sound ok by putting it on mute an turning the volume up, but most of the time nothing comes out of it at all. I opened it up and cleaned it with a can of compressed air hoping that removing 20 years of dust would do the trick, but no joy.
Should I get it repaired or just move onto something a bit more modern?

What's the old saying? "The originals are the best"...

Lovely piece of kit and testament to Yamaha's build that it's lasted so long but in this case it's upgrade time. Audio codecs have changed so much that the latest receivers will offer significant improvements from this alone, then you have HDMI, music streaming & AirPlay to name just a few great new features.

The A1 was a powerful amp so assuming you have some half decent speakers you'll want something with guts. Without going nuts I'd look at the Marantz SR6008 and Denon AVR-X4000. Both around the £1k mark and very proficient.
