Approached for publication of pictures

Today I received an email from a London based publisher who wants to use two pictures that I have on Flickr. They are currently working on a a high-end luxury lifestyle publication, made currently for the Asian market.

To be honest: I am not sure if this is for real. Has anyone of you ever been approached like this?

Depends what the subject is.

Picture research is part of my role, and my experience is that non-hackneyed stock imagery is difficult to find, and commissioned is expensive.

If they ask you for money, or free usage, they're scammers / chancing their arm. If not, then negotiate.

I get about one a month (though I'm not on flickr).

I always ask what it's for. If it's a national newspaper/mag, they pay a rate that is known (and I charge them VAT). If it's obscure and niche, then it's time to negotiate. If they want it for free then it has to be a good cause or I'll tell them to show me the money, or at least credit me.

I do end up giving away a lot for free, as there are lots of good causes that I'm happy to support.

I was approached via Flickr a few years ago by someone working for the Discovery Channel, they wanted to use one of my images in a TV show. I was happy to allow them to use it as long as I got a credit.

I never thought they used it until I was watching Ancient Aliens on H2 last week and saw my photo complete with name in the credits

The difference is: you take great photos and I am an amateur.

The only time I let someone pay for the use of a picture was when the picture was on the frontpage of the biggest newpaper here. I think I give my permission and ask for a copy of the magazine.
