I bought a £295 Nissan Sunny purely to get to and from a job at the other end of the country (Medway to Ayrshire and back) now it has fulfilled it's task it will become the 'daily'.

The question now is what to do at MOT time in July next year...

It will most likely need the n/s sill welding and possibly one tyre for the MOT (that's all I can find at the minute) BUT the mainshaft bearing in the gearbox is grumbling too (new gearbox)

So to the question:

How much do I spend to keep it on the road?

What it'll need:
  • Welding <£100
  • Tyre <£40
  • Gearbox <£140+ fitting
What it's worth:
  • Paid £295
  • Market value £360-£400
  • Scrap value £120-£180
So how much would you/should I spend to get through an MOT if it fails?

Fix it if;

  • it costs less to fix than I'll get for scrap
  • it costs less to fix than I paid
  • Up to the market value
Or do I just scrap it?

No chance I'd spend that kind of cash on that car. Run it until it dies, then scrap.

weld it, chuck a tyre on it, ignore the gearbox until it gives up.

Then scrap.

Are you actually, honestly worrying about what to do about the MOT in 9 months on a £300 car? Really?

If it makes it that far chuck it in for a test a month before it's up and maybe you'll get lucky. If you don't you can make a call then with plenty of time to sort it out. Job done, stop fussing.

I think gearbox price is high, but I see your point. I'd repair it ideally, it seems to have done OK so far and it could be a challenge to see what miles you can put on it

Spend £5k on a total refurb, bring it back to show room standard then run it for another 10 years! Yey! smile) or just drive it to the nearest scrappy and walk away. It's a Nissan sunny!!!
Buy a quarter decent car for £800. A tank of petrol cost nearly £100 ffs. Lol smile

This is a serious amount of fussing over a £300 car.

How did people cope before internet forums were around?

Well it did 1024 miles there and back, £140 for the box included courier delivery (I'd pay to see a Yodel driver try and drop kick that over the garden fence hehe)

So to keep a shed on the road, a small amount of welding and a tyre is OK but major component replacement is a step to far?

Not worried/fussing about it, more curious as to how far I could go with out becoming the fool & money easily parted...

ETA: yes I know... I'm already a fool for paying cash for a Sunny rolleyes
