Hi,

Had a Defender 200tdi and Disco V8 but have now moved on to a Disco 2 TD5.

Got a couple of problems that I could do with some help with..

Firstly, there is an almighty squeal/squeak/whistle from 2000rpm-3000rpm when accelerating hard. Forum searches have brought up anything from manifold warping to turbo failure. It’s pulling ok, feels down on power I suppose, but not greatly. So, is there a typical cause for this?

Secondly, the stereo is very quiet, almost like it will only go a third of the way to full volume.

Thirdly, got an oil leak. Going to have a good look tomorrow to see where it’s originating from, but would appreciate any ideas from experienced TD5 owners.

Also, can anyone recommend a reliable Landy specialist in Berkshire/Hampshire?

Cheers,

James

If it's down on power in could be the turbo/intercooler pipe starting to collapse inside

First point..my money would be on a warped manifold - check all your manifold studs are there. No idea on the second. Third point depends where its dripping- I had a leak from the back of the rocker cover due to a poorly fitted gasket.

Power/whistle... I'd check the pipe work leading to the turbo for signs of failure.

Radio... It sounds like there's an amplifier failure somewhere.

Oil leak... Depends where it is!

Cheers.

Going to have a look at the manifold today, see if I can see any missing studs

Exhaust Manifold as suggested.

Does you stereo have a power amp, could that be at fault. ( I really have not idea, just a thought!)

Old leak, it is part of the charm. Mine leaks from the steering box, and other places!

Join the d2boysclub, they have a Nanocom/hawkeye locator. Always useful to assist in fault diagnosis!

It would appear it is the exhaust manifold. Had a good feel around this afternoon (good job my hands aren't huge)- the lower bolt nearer the bulkhead is missing and also the upper nearest the radiator is missing too. All the rest are intact.

My next question is, how much of a job is it to do myself? I'm not completely inept and have done plenty of work on my cars in the past. I've been quoted £300 all in to do the job at a LR independent specialist- that includes a ready skimmed manifold, removal of all bolts, helicoiling if necessary, new bolts, and re-fitting.

What do you think?

Have a word with JE Engineering about their updated gasket.
