Possible Blown Differential!
Discussion
I think I just lost the diff on my 4.5LW (Hydratrack). I ‘enthusiastically’ exited a roundabout in 1st gear and suddenly heard a bang followed by a very nasty metal on metal sound from rear of car. I don’t think it’s a drive shaft or C.V joint as I still had drive. Pulled the car to the side of the road and diff and rear geometry looked straight enough. Tentatively pulled away in 1st again only to hear a very nasty grinding noise from rear of car. The noise was there irrespective of clutch engagement and neutral. Does this sound like my diff? Could it be a collapsed wheel bearing?
Hopefully it will be covered on warranty. Does anybody know the cost of a replacement / recondition diff? Will it be a better to replace with a standard LSD rather than Hydratrack?
I’m glad this happened today and not at 170mph on the runway at Bruntingthorpe tomorrow!
Cheers,
Rob

Thanks Ash,
Car got dropped of at Fernie's last night. Let me see what the problem is exactly and wether the warrantly covers a new 'broken bit' first. I'll be in touch if it doesn't!
Thanks for the offer,
Rob
Sounds like the Rear Diff Bush to me.
Good news is the part only costs about 12 quid.
Bad news is it takes about 5 hours to put in !!
Hope its good news for you !
Hi Bandit,
I've had the rear diff bush go in the past. It resulted in nothing more than some freeplay in the drive train and a bit of slap when changing gear.
Fernie's have been in touch and apparently this time I've ripped off the brackets that hold the diff in place. That would explain the bang! The grinding noise was down to the drive shaft making contact with a chasis member. Hopefully it looks like I've got away without serious damage.
Does anybody know if this will be a valid warranty claim?
Cheers,
Rob
