Solution to national debt via motorists?
Discussion
Why don't we up the size of the speeding fine, to say £200, and remove the penalty points?
But then impose either a stiffer penalty over certain speeds or invoke the points.
Say you get caught doing 37 in a 30 you would be offered a £200 fine and no points or a £60 fine and 2 points.
Obviously this would sound lenient to the people who are excessively speeding, so another example would be if your going saw 45+ in a 30 then it would be 6 points and a £200 fine?
I'm not condoning speeding, i'm just considering ways to make money from it (beyond the millions that are already made).
What do people think?

Why not start fining people for poor driving rather than taking the easy route of using arbitrary limits that treat us all like morons who are incapable of decision making?
Two problems.Firstly "poor" driving is highly subjective. Already laws in place for careless and dangerous driving.
Secondly who would police that. When was the last time you saw an increasingly rare traffic police person when you needed one.

I can't agree with that. 30s are the one place it should be enforced harder, and people fined more.Limit on NSL / Motorways should be far more about the conditions and the road, a 30 is a 30 for a good reason and I think if you're going to up the fines, it should be for speeding in 30s and 40s, where, in my opinion, it matters far more.
I did a speed awareness course years and years ago, and vaguely remember they insisted motorways account for just 4% of road deaths (or may be 4% of accidents, I frankly don't remember which one)

Agreed, i'm not saying i'm right, but given the resources we have, would they not want to make more money from it? IE if you don't get points you can pay more fines?RSoovy4 said:

you can suggest a better way to do it.
How about1. Getting control on immigration
2. Cutting the spend on benefits
3. Stop giving billions in aid to countries with.... ooooooh say a space program
4. Stop paying billions every week to the EU
How's that?
Although i do see your point in that there are more urgent issues. But lots of things can be tackled simultaneously.

You expect to get a positive response to making higher driving fines on a motoring site?
Last i knew, this was a motoring discussion forum so i am just asking a question. I'm not suggesting its correct. I'd love answers as to why it would not work or answers why it could.

Or perhaps just fine them 200 quid on entry, you know, just for the sake of it.
The EU would implode with fury

Maybe your sarcasm has an underlying point? perhaps we should charge immigrants for entry?
My point was the motorist is already persecuted to a level which is getting ridiculous, with cameras everywhere and local councils going to the lengths of having cameras cars driving around fining you for so much as breathing, the money doesnt get reinvested back into the road network. Do you have any idea how big the debt is?But then impose either a stiffer penalty over certain speeds or invoke the points.

Its many many thousands per person, and its increasing at a rate of half a billion per day even with all the cut so far.

but i am aware that the debt is around 1 trillion pounds or something close to that, i don't believe its growing at 500 million a day.
