Are aunctions still places for bargains?
Discussion
Had a quick nosey on an auction site before (BCA).
It seems majorly changed since i looked on the site a few years ago. I found a 330d with 4 photos, 2007, warranted miles, and a 1-page A4 sheet detailing fluid levels, engine noises, tyre depth, and loads of other stuff detailing the condition and any mechanical issues?
Are the days of turning up and the car condtion being a complete lottery a thing of the past?
I've also never been to an auction before, does it cost anything to go and look around and watch? I guess not, but i can imagine it being a fun day out.

No charge for going to have a look. Watch out for the auction fees on top of hammer price.
Personally I dont think auctions (exp. BCA) are worth it any more - based on the prices when I last went (BCA apprx 3 months ago) you can get comparable cars for less privately. I think the whole concept of auctions is less daunting for Joe Public now, due to eBay etc, so there are a lot of private buyers when it used to be mainly trade selling to trade.

Agreed- unless you've got access to one of the higher levels of membership there's no point as the private buyers' fees are extortionate and 9/10 times you could get a better deal privately in my experience. Cars are expensive within the auctions and have been for a while. We are paying quite a bit over Cap and Glass for stock. If you have never been before then go grab a coffee and a bacon sarnie and go for a wander. If your planning going soon especially Blackbushe then wear a thick jumper as it's f

Been on there a few times recently looking at ex Motability stuff, but I suppose that is exactly the kind of thing the private buyers are hoovering up, full history, low mileage, probably well presented. About as low risk as auction purchases get.
A lot of ex Motabilty cars are very tatty grade five the worst condition and whilst low mileage have also been driven badly so transmissions are often premature failures. Only a few decent cars which always get top money....av185 said:

The ones I found looked OK, including a 60 plate Meriva with 1100 miles - not my cup of tea but basically new. There will be some s
te though, I suppose.I saw on honestjohn last week there was a selection of vehicles listed that went through an auction with the prices.
No 2007, 330d mentioned but you might be able to see on other models what sort of value they went through at compared to private sales.

I was at manheim yesterday the cars were overpriced on the whole, I saw cheaper cars on ebay for sure. there was 1 maybe 2 I would call bargains, I saw one dealer bid up his own car I was bidding for, I knew this because I have seen him around a lot and I know what company he works for, as do the auctioneers and they allow it to happen, I promptly pulled out and he bought his own car. auctions are not what they were 10 years ago

I always go to manheim wimbledon
What's it like at manheim Wimbledon, particularly for cheap low end stuff/Part exchanges? I've always meant to go but am only interested in stuff at the bottom of the market and as such spend my time at err... "lower grade" auctions shall we say (dingwalls croydon and docklands whatever its called in Deptford).JoshyS said:

if you want lower grade stuff you need to go on a weds in hall 2 its good for that sort of stuff as most people are looking at 2k plus cars, I would not touch dingwalls with a barge pole.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
