E60 M5 Purcahse Dilema, a tale of two cars

Gents,

i am currently on the look for an E60 M5. i have whittled my search down to two M5's.

one is an AUC E60 M5, very nice specification, 56 plate. offered with 2 years full AUC warranty. currently sitting on 58k miles, the clutch i am told has not been replaced. it is over 100 miles away so not test driven it yet feel relatively comfortable with it given the details ive been provided with over the phone. 2 owner car.

second car is an E60 M5 from an indie, again very nice specification. I would put the fully comp AUC warranty on this car myself. it has only 30k miles on it, 07 plate. its not presented as well as the AUC car (mismatching tyres front and back). again didnt get to test drive it. again, its a 2 owner car.

i would plan on keeping the car for 2 years. (so with the AUC car, as soon as it was out of warranty i would look to get rid of it.)

so basically the query or question is would you buy a lower milage M5 from an indie, OR a higher milage M5 from a main dealer.

i do about 25k miles a year.

Is the 07 a facelift?

There would need to be at least 2K difference in price between the two, taking into account that you would get 1 year AUC and could possibly negotiate a second year included, for me to choose the 07 over the AUC one.

Out of the 2 -I'd choose the 07 one personally - if you are going to add 50k miles to it your better to start with the lower mileage one, as trying to shift one with over 100k on the clock could be a lot, lot harder...

Personally i'd be considering something else if I were doing 25000 miles a year, like a Diesel for the long journeys and something else for the fun. We were running an Amg Merc for our 12-15000 miles a year and we are saving like £5k per year now were on a diesel BMW and its all going into the Ferrari funds


25000 miles a year in the e60 m5 will cost you £10k a year alone in fuel! Plus the tiny tank will annoy you?

Go and see and test drive BOTH cars. Judge on condition (not mileage) and gut feel. That 2 years AUC warranty would give you peace of mind... assume it's this one:

owned two V10's previously so yes, the short range does annoy but the sound/thrill/speed of driving more than makes up for it.

fuel card so those costs are covered.

in 2 years time how much more would an E60 with 80k miles be worth than a E60 M5 with 80k miles? thats the question i guess.

If I were doing 25k miles per year, I personally, wouldn't go for an e60 M5.
Ignoring the fuel costs, visiting a petrol station to fill up twice a week, would get tiring very quickly.
Give it some regular stick, and the visits will be even more frequent.

Having said that, If you are OK with the fuel range, good luck with the search.

Buy on condition, not mileage.

In the situation you face, assuming the difference in price between the vehicles is minimal, I would take the AUC. Firstly being an AUC means that if something goes wrong you have a bigger entity to kick, additionally i would try and get them to change the clutch as a condition of the sale.

I think the difference in depreciation of the 2 cars over your 2 years of ownership will be nothing when compared to the overall costs of owning either of the cars.

That's not a facelift and looks a bit scruffy from the photos. I'd be leaning towards the AUC one especially if you can negotiate a new clutch as part of the deal.

Yes - AUC all the way if they throw in a 2nd years warranty (costs them £500) and a clutch change.

Perhaps offering full price subject to the above would get the deal,especially if you agree it on the last day of the month!

Exterior too. Tailpipes not sparkling, rusty wheel bolts and de-laminating wheel badges. All minor stuff which can be sorted but gives you a clue to how much attention the previous owner lavished on it.

It does look a good 'un and, in a previous thread, you said it looked the "perfect car". Combine the trip up to collect with a short break... then enjoy the long drive back!
