domain name renewal

i have a domain name that needs to be renewed.
however, when transferring it between hosts, it "got lost" - the name servers never got updated, and though the old company said it had been transferred, the new company didn't have control of it either
at the time i was too busy to chase it up, and it got forgotten (the old site still worked fine). Now it needs renewing. I've had emails from every company under the sun, except the one that's supposed to control it.
How the H8ll do I go about renewing it? I was considering a domain watcher, but it's an .info name so no go apparently. Do I just keep trying to register it (as a new domain) every day till it says it's available?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
