996 Turbo sudden bad oil leak

I’ve owned the car for about 3 years and the engine has always been dry. After a 60 mile run yesterday I was greeted by an oily smell and backend covered in oil mist. Looking closer the underside of engine was covered in oil but having another look this morning it appears to be coming from gap between engine block and drivers side turbo. Oil pressure was normal on yesterday’s run, but I did ‘use’ about 2 litres of oil!

First job will be to clean everything so I can identify source of leak, but does anyone have any suggestions of likely culprits to look out for?

Not sure if it's the same on the Turbo, but my NA 3.6 had very similar symptoms. It only leaked when running, no drips on the garage floor etc.

It was the crush washer on the chain tensioner bolt that had failed. I lost some oil but no adverse effects (other than cleaning up!).

Good news was it's a 50p part plus an hours labour. I opted for a oil change too, but I might have got away with a top-up.

Hopefully yours is a simple fix like mine was.

I had the exact same thing on my 997

Thanks for the suggestion, it would be good news if it was something so simple, although the drips do appear to becoming from between engine block and turbo.

could it be a leaky rocker/valve cover? I have heard they can leak and I have noticed my 996 C2 is a bit oily on the drivers side in that area although it's not dripping and there is no measurable oil leak
