Nikon D5300

Hasn't the D5200 only just come out? Now the D5300 is released in a month (Nov 21st)! The D5200 is still marked as "New" on the Nikon site.

Built in WiFi and GPS are tempting. Flip out monitor is bigger. The rest of the specs seem pretty similar to the D5200. Still looks lacking in buttons on the rear/top which is the main issue with my D5100.

Is this the camera the D5200 should have been if they didn't have to rush one out every year?

The Nikon D610 is the bigger pisstake.

I seem to remember a while back that they announced that they would be doing shorter release cycles for the consumer level DSLRs, presumably because of the falling sales in the compact market. I expect to see the D3XXX and D5XXX lines updated every 12-18 months. Canon did similar with the 650D being replaced by the 700D and there were barely any differences there.

This seems a reasonable update of the D5200 though - Wifi and GPS are good to have and removing the AA filter follows the trend set by the D800E and D7100.

TBH, the D610 was probably necessary just to put an end to the shutter dust issue. The release of both should make for some savings on still excellent cameras in the D5200 and D600.

Nikon might chuck out these cameras with alarming regularity, but the fact is that they produce pictures of such a high standard these days there's only the need to replace them if they break.

I have a D700 which is three years old and a D7000 which I recently bought as a I need to shoot some video, but also for the convenience that a spare body offers. (I like the flexibility having one FX and one DX).

Can't see me replacing either for a number of years.

The new 58/1.4 is more of a pisstake at $1700usd!
