...or that he's just being wildly optimistic, so thinks that if someone is interested he can know a chunk off the price and make the punter fell like they're getting a good deal.

I think it's a case of chalk it up to experience, you agreed a price and did a deal, can't see how there's anything you can do.

Today he has the car listed as available soon for £3999 (it's worth maybe half that!).
If it's not worth that then he won't sell it for that, but he has to start somewhere to cope with daft offers from punters plus giving good deals on dodgy trade ins.

There is nothing here to name and shame about, that's how it works.

Oh I know biggrin

But the car needed to go. £200-250 quid extra in a private sale probably wasn't worth it for the time I'd spend trying to sell it

You sold him the car for £ x

He can put it up for £20k if he wants.

If you did a poor deal it's your own fault!

You got a price for the car you were happy with, having failed to get a better price elsewhere.

What the guy sells it on for is completely irrelevant.

If you were not happy with the price you shouldn't have sold it!

I sold a Caterham to a foreign buyer who, before collection, had already advertised it elsewhere for twice as much as he was paying for it. So what? He was taking the risk and I got a fair price for the car from my perspective (and I still don't know if he actually sold it, and if so, what for).

Agree with the others. Also, you agreed a deal with him and took the money. All the risk is now on him. You say yourself that the car is not worth that, so if you are right, its unlikely he will get it. I would move on and not think about it, and rather look forward to enjoying whatever your next set of wheels will be to replace it.

Maybe accept the fact that he offered a price that you were happy to accept and move on with your life?

Maybe there ended up being more repairs than he thought there would be and he is trying to recoup his investment. Would you be happy if that was the case and he came back to you saying he thinks he overpaid and would like to re-negotiate?

I understand that. I'm not knocking the guy's ability to make a profit. What's annoying is he deliberately misled me.

Why?

It's all what's known as "mere advertising puff".

You got sucked in by his patter. He's put it up at £3999 in the hope that some dopey get will pay it, but at the end of the day you decided to sell for £x and that's that. What he does with his property is his business not yours!!

You sold it for a price you were happy with. Move on.

So what?
He could have told you that he needed to respray it pink for it to be worth anything.

I've heard of buyers getting annoyed by being misled by sellers - but never the other way round.

Besides - he may have paid for the work to be done, or have budgeted as part of the price.

Or he just bought a cheap car and is selling it.

It isn't that hard to understand biggrin I was happy with the deal, but I was duped into thinking he wouldn't get closer to my original figure because he lied.

Probably just chancing his arm at that price, probably will get closer to £2999 but if he listed it at £2999 he's got no manoeuvre room after costs.

It was only £250 less than the price you wanted so I wouldn`t beat yourself up over it.
He can ask whatever he likes for the car, what someone will actually pay is a different matter...

I sold a '99 Mitsubishi Galant a few years back to a couple of "geezers" for just over £600. Saw it parked on the side of the road a week later advertised for over 2 grand!
If they can sell it for that then fair play to them, no-one was prepared to offer me anything like that price for it...
I seriously doubt they got anything like that for it.
