Business trip next month will leave me with a few spare days in Los Angeles / Santa Barbara / San Diego to do car related stuff. Petersen Museum is top of list, Pomona swop meet would be but it's not on when I'm there. Any suggestions of places to go and see ? My interests are more classic than modern or race. Thanks. DH

Thanks Steveo, exactly what I'm after. Didn't know about Marconi so will do that and the SolCal list has shown some options, there is a breakfast club at Petersens when I'm there so will try and go that day.

Any more ?

Mainly 50s American but really anything from Model T via Tucker to Tesla. Tuning and tool shops interesting as well, will certainly go to Craftsman and Frys Electronics.

Try Renta Wreck on Pico. Well it was there in '92. Got myself a '69 Mustang 'vert to cruise around in for the day. They had a load of 60s cars but it was a while a go.

The Peterson Museum is extremely good. Pay the extra $25 to take the tour of the basement, there's a lot down there that isn't on display.

There's a small car museum in Balboa Park in San Diego that's not bad, and there's an OK air and space museum next to it.

The roads around San Diego are particularly fun, especially Mt Palomar: http://lateralg.org/roads/sandiego/1.htm

Here's a route i used to do when I lived there:

SR-74 is also a cracking drive.

Pomona is the one....
but have you considered Long Beach Swop Meet on the 12th Nov
http://www.longbeachhiposwapmeet.com/about
I'm sure they do a similar swop meet in San Diago.

Don't forget to get a 50/50 shake at any Ruby's diner.

Enjoy

Thanks, re the car, not many options on this trip as company is paying but top tip, I always use Alamo in the States as in most locations you can pick your own car rather than have what the rental person decides. Last time there were more than 20 makes and models in each class so they say something like "choose any car in row F"

Thanks for the tips, keep them coming, and yes I've also noticed Craftsman tools are not what they were !

Pop in to see ex-pat Steve Dennish at Limeworks Speedshop.

The legendary So-Cal Speedshop in Pomona is worth a visit as well.

Cars and coffee in Irvine as previously suggested is good for a Saturday morning, although you need to be there early as people start going home at 8am. Another choice for a Saturday morning is Derelicts and Donuts in Huntingdon Beach, again this is an early morning meet, mainly for old hot rods and classics. Cars and coffee is a good mix of different cars.
