Engine numbers - any experts here???

Ours in in for a bit of work at present and I took a picture whilst it was in bits. When I looked at the handbook I noticed that the handbook said 37A50.... and the actual engine number was 47A06...... No confidence in the TVR numbers as the car datasheet states a/c and PAS - neither of which it has.
Is this in sequence as I suspect a new engine at some point?
The number appears to be in the Wedge or V8S sequence and only 1 other Griff has this number sequence - as per Richard Sails - TVRCC archivist.
Dave Mac - yours is 47A... - please e-mail me if you know what it is from (year etc). I knwo yours has had 20ish engines so it may not be possible - particularly given TVR record keeping.
Totally confused - I will be asking Jamie when I pick the car up.
Any assistance in the meantime would be much appreciated.

I've just checked my details, and it was my last 4.0ltr Griff that had the engine number 47A40P...
That was registered on 01/08/92

My current car has the engine number 37A50P...
As you know,it was registered about 1990/1991ish?
(or March 1989 if you go off the V5!)
The last engine was fitted in 2000,but,whether it was a brand new one I don't know

Doe this mean the number after the A denotes engine size ie 40=4 litre, 50=5 litre. If so ours is 600cc????????? Never seen a 600cc V8!!!
Also, as I understand the vast majority of Griffs are 37A especially the later ones. Again ours is 47A so where has this come from??
Not sure I really want to know but I'm really curious now.

The Rover engine number is the one relatively easy to see. The TVR engine number is stamped on the block just below the left hand cylinder head below the PAS pump/idler.

Thanks everyone - Paul's now spoken to Jamie at TVR Power and he said there are two engine numbers - one original Land Rover number and a second TVR number. So all sorted!

The LR number has now gone anyway so I'll never get confused again.
Hopefully get the car back today. Got to run it in so glad it's winter.

Picking it up tonight.
Have got to run it in and then it should be going in for a respray - 5 months after some numpty hit it. I'm still arguing a couple of points with the insurer but suffice to say we won't be renewing with them.
May go up to Peter Smith at the weekend (weather depending) to start the running in process and give the battery a good charge up.

We may be there saturday pm so that we can go to EMTVRCC sunday.

If you're going sunday, the easiest way to find the pub is.........

Head for the roundabout at the A612/A6097 Lowdham Take the A612 heading towards Southwell. After about 150 yards, turn left immediately before the Magna Charter Pub. after about 400 yards, the pub is on the right, but the overspill car park is on the left. Unless you know where the pub is, it's easier to look for the trees on the left, and the low red-brick wall, with the Village Hall signboard.
