Well now the forum's been split I thought I'd just say that I've had my 2.7 987 for a little over 4 years which is 2 years longer that I have ever owned another car and I've owned around 30 quality motors in my time. It's a second car and the trouble is whenever I've thought about selling it and getting something else I always seem to come back to the Boxster.

I've driven the 981 and several 911s, F Types, Astons, Italian stuff and yes they're faster, prettier, louder, more exotic and of course more expensive but none seem to give you the smile in the same way the Boxster does. For the money, I've concluded that there just isn't anything else that does what it does and give someone like me with limited driving skills and ambition so much pleasure in everyday driving conditions.

I suspect that I'll trade up to a 981 at some point but not until something major goes wrong with my current car and after 4 reasonably trouble free years that my be some time off.

When I recently replaced my 03 S with a 987.2 S, I deliberately did not test drive the 981 as I didn't want to risk further upgrade envy. I will upgrade at some point but am sick of losing so much in depreciation

I keep thinking I'm going to sell my Box, then I take it out with the roof down and I come to the same conclusion every time, yes it would be good to have some more straight line speed, but when it comes to stopping and handling what could you buy thats better without going huge expense.

Well, IMO the Boxster 981 is a Lotus for grown-ups!

Easily beat both Evora S and Exige S (V6) for my requirements. Advantages include,
  • Front and rear of the car styled by the same person.
  • You can actually get in - and out.
  • Roof goes up and down so easily.
  • Properly designed and built interior.
  • Very competitive price.

Funnily enough I'm doing a extended comparison/ test drive between a BMW m135i convertible, mini jcw roadster and a boxster tomorrow. Not for me you understand wink but for my OH. Looks like we are going to have the perfect English sunshine and temp for the occasion hehe

I would of liked to throw in the new jag and possibly the lotus but both have been discounted by the management, so we have ended with this strange mix for testing convertibles. The mini roadster because the OH really likes the cooper s, the bmer because the nephew let her drive his and the boxster because I think the roadster and 1 series convertible are absolutely fking ste in comparison. Hopefully adding jcw and M to badge will improve the odds of getting a fun car, rather than a trinket.

Didn't realise there was a mini JCB roadster. Got stuck behind a maxi JCB aviation one on the A511 today doing 0mph through Coalville this arvo.

The Boxster is just awesome, too bad many people on here feel it necessary to remind us it is 'the wife's' at every possible opportunity, you would think they were insecure about their sexuality wink

Wow what a fabulous car! An actual proper sunny day and top down motoring for a few glorious hours.

Initially it was quite underwhelming, feeling more like fiesta shopping trolley than a Porsche sports car. The Pdk changed gears as required, always trying to trundle the car ago at around 1000rpm with the stop/ start cutting the engine out whenever stationary. The suspension is very subtle and forgiving - not in the same league as the 991 but close, the steering ok and seemed overly light when compared to a 997.

.. But when you flick the Pdk to manual press the sports button and start to work the engine hard up to its redline over one of your favourite roads (in my case the seven Ss from bishops cleeve to Tewksbury smile - three times) it becomes a different beast. The car is incredibly well balanced and progressive on either power slides or limited grip corners. The steering just seems to come alive the more you cane the car.The engine sound is ok but you definitely need pse or an oem exhaust

Minus points IMHO were: why is the gearing so long? You only seem to use 2nd and third to keep anywhere near sane speeds. Why does porsche never give full manual control of the Pdk? I find it really annoying that putting your foot fully down may result in a automatic pdk down change in sport/manual mode. Why does the traction control cut in so quick? The 997 one is nowhere near as intrusive, but at least you can (almost) turn it off

The other two cars were ste in comparison IMHO. The OH choose the mini roadster. Mini purgatory. The end.
