Obviously I'll be ringing DVLA first thing Monday morning, but in the meantime I have this puzzle.

I'm currently doing a chassis up rebuild of a 1974 land rover. I have the log book, VIN plate, number plates etc. As well as the original chassis, and a load of body work to go on it. It's currently SORNed.

Today, I've got home and found a letter stating:

"Acknowledgement
This confirms that we have updated our records for this vehicle and you are no longer the registered keeper..."

Any ideas anyone???

Has somebody craftily pinched the ID of your vehicle for a ringer? I guess you might find out on Monday?

It's been off the road for longer than I've owned it, as I purchased it as a project. Infact I've no idea when it was last on the road.

What details would someone need to change keeper? The number plates haven't been on the chassis since I've owned it (they're sat in a box), so it wouldn't be someone passing and picking up the house address and the plates.

It might be a simple admin error and somebody has keyed in an incorrect digit. Possibly. But it could also be somebody trying to register a ringer, as has been suggested.

They do seem to have been a bit 'under pressure' recently since they shut the local offices, and once again they realise that it isn't as easy as they think to centralise everything. Good luck getting through to them!

Have you put any pics up on the web? You'd only need the reg no iirc.

Not to make you too paranoid but seeing as you've never had the car on the road since you've owned it, do you have a ringer in your garage?

Trying to figure out how that would work. Someones sold you a ringer and the original one that has also been off the road for a long time has just swapped owners?

Simple

2 cars potentially share the same ID (VIN or REG)

OP owns one, the other car with the same ID has had its paperwork pass through the DVLA in Swansea, the letter that was sent out is a warning to the OP that something odd has happened as he hasn't sold his car but as far as the DVLA are concered he has sold it. The problem is only one of these cars can be legit and no one can be sure which one till checks are conducted, if the OP doesn't sort it out though it will be difficult to get their old car back onto the road legitimately as it's ID is being used the second vehicle else where.

Not yet, I phoned the DVLA on Monday. And they're supposedly now doing some sort of investigation, and they'll get back to me. I've no idea how long I should expect this to take though.

Dad had similar - 2 Moggy Minors with the same No plate.

After an investigation it turned out it was a cock up when registered from new.

One or other had been off the road since computerized records began.

Dad was offered to "take his pick" from whatever plates were available so it worked out very well for him.

Just got a conclusion to this one. There was a mistake on the V5 I had; it looks like it was the wrong barcode on it.

So I've been sent a new V5, and there was nothing malicious going on. I actually think this was handled pretty quickly for the DVLA.
