What cheap rust free great sounding classic?
Discussion
I am after a classic car, something small like a BMW 2002.
Apart from the 2002, what else can you recommend that would be great sounding, easy to work on, and not an absolute rust bucket. I know 2002's can have rust issues too, but I'm talking Lancia type rust issues.
Maybe something like a Porsche 914?
I'm looking for something relatively sporty, that can be tuned a little. Maybe even engine swapped at some point.
Preferably between £3K-£6K.

Am I right to be confused about the genuine Alpina model with perhaps not so genuine alloys?I'm not a 5 series savant, but certainly with the E36 Alpina a tell-tale of a replica were visible tyre valves (as they are, I believe supposed to be behind the centre cap).
Are these different? Slightly off topic, apologies for that.

All the usual suspects from the 70s have their rust issues.Apart from the 2002, what else can you recommend that would be great sounding, easy to work on, and not an absolute rust bucket. I know 2002's can have rust issues too, but I'm talking Lancia type rust issues.

And, as I'm sure you know, the market is strongest for original, unmodified cars. So engine swaps are likely to be value destroying.
The e21 BMW 3er might be worth a look. Again, rust is an issue, but they're a little more modern to drive than the 2002. You'd should get a cracker for your budget. A straight six engined example would go some way towards your "great sounding" criteria.
And I've recently fulfilled an old itch and bought a Mk2 Golf GTI - very mod-able, good to chuck around, cheap to run, plentiful parts supply etc. Not a particularly good noise though.
Has to be a TVR S, classic looks but modern (ish) running gear. Easy to work on, get parts for and cheap to run/insure. On top of that they sound epic!

not the best video but you get to hear it. Sound as good as the V8's with a fraction of the cost.
I had mine for several years and ended up putting a cosworth into it.
In all honesty though you should save a little more and just get a decent Chimaera...... its so worth it!

Be lucky to find one in the OP's budget, and especially one that's not already a drift slag or rally car.I've seen nice ones not in the above category going for nearly 10k.
And even at that price they probably ended up in Ireland being turned into rally cars.
