Had to vent my frustration, within 1/2 hour of listing a car for sale I have had three emails from supposedly interested buyers. Suspicions raised when you get an email from a Mr Bolley Smith, gets even more suspicious when they are asking you about service history when it is listed in meticulous detail in the advert. Finally when they say they will pay you by paypal, that they are naval officer so can't call and will sort out a shipping agent to pick up the car.

Aaaaarrggghh! I can see through these scams I just hope that everyone else does, I'm sure that the members of the PH fraternity would be like me, but they must trick some people!

I assume other people have had the same problem?

yup. Fifty fecking quid for 10 scam e-mails, all from "english" sounding mail addresses, all scripted in a virtually identical way.

1. Asking questions where the answers are already stated clearly in the advert..
2..then offereing the full price anyway.
3. Work offshore, cannot be contacted AT ALL, EVER.
4. Can only pay using Paypal.
5. Will send an agent to collect the car.

After which I will assume they reverse the payment, or put it into dispute (claim never shipped?), and you are down a car and several grand.

My response was to tell them to use Payapl to send the money to your agent, who can then bring me the cash on collection. Didn't hear from them again.

However, the sheer volume of scammers on there will mean I will never, ever use AT again. They even put a disclaimer up at the top of mail enquiry.

Not a scam, but useless Yousef rang to view my SEAT Toledo 1.8T 180 last weekend, cancelled twice, then said it was too big for his wife. I'm assuming he meant my car hehe

It meant both Saturday and Sunday being affected as I'd agreed to be in at 3pm for a viewing. Then leaving work early on Monday only for him to text me just before he was due to arrive mad I've never had an issue in selling plenty of my old cars before this muppet.

It's still for sale frown

Totally agree. Probably an impossible task. Oh well, I'm going to have some fun with these enquiries :-)

Not saying they are doing it, but it would make them a lot of money if people got fed up of nuisance emails and took cars to them....

I had one of these emails about my EP3 the other day.

"What is the condition like? Is there any condition not described in the advert?"

"I would like to buy the car as a surprise for a friend. The friend must not know about it. I will pay by paypal, and collect through a third party" etc etc. fking tit.

If my ad expires and my car still has not sold, I'll just put the damn thing on ebay next time.

Easy solution don't include your Email address - real buyers will use a phone.

Yes but if it's a mobile you still get marketing txts (eg wbac) and "best price"/timewasters in my experience!

Next time i think i'll insist on the novel idea of a conversation with potential purchasers...

Because it requires some effort. Much easier to chuck a few mobile speed cameras at places where the limit is just plain wrong.

OP, had exactly the same this week, and one of them was from a Bolley Smith...

I just ignored any emails that didn't mention the car make and model in the text or didn't ask what seemed a sensible question (that would be all but one, then...).

As another poster said, real buyers tend to phone. Sold my car this morning to the first phone caller about the car :-)

Bob - Bolley Smith has been in touch with me this evening. If you are going to make up a name make it convincing!!
