What's it like? Good/bad points?

Areas to focus on or avoid, if you were living there?

I am exploring a job opportunity there. I have never visited Batley and know nothing about it. Obviously I will visit, and do web research, but I wanted to hear from people who know the area.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I'm from Batley and currently live just up the road.
Not the worst place in the world, but hardly riveting.
Good motorway and transport links, big Tesco, close to a few bigger cities for any other needs.
Quite a few PHers around this neck of the woods too.

If you die in Batley, do you die in real life?

Cha Cha Pizza in the Market Place is awesome (or at least it was last time I was there).

Some of the outskirts are OK, but Batley is a proper sheite hole.

Birstall is much nicer than Batley,
There is a nice big retail park at Birstall, loads of places to eat out, IKEA and the cinema.
Do you know roughly where you are going to be working?
There are some really nice places to live a few miles away dependant on your budget.

The job opportunity is apparently quite near the railway station. Is it any good around there?

I'm not expecting Harrods on the doorstep, but I am concerned about safety, security, local facilities (shops, healthcare etc.) and it being a generally pleasant place to spend time.

Also, if there isn't much there, what are the nearest "good" places? I'll check out Birstall...

It isnt brilliant round Batley station.

If you live in Birstall it should take 10 minutes or so by car.

I wouldnt look to live Dewsbury direction from your new work, Gomersal, Birkenshaw, Roberttown even parts of Cleckheaton and heckmondwike are ok and are still <20mins from Batley station

This is an example of what you can get for not a lot
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

There is a Junior school 5 minutes walk away as is Batley Girls High School. There is also the sports centre within 10 mins walk. Big tesco extra in batley is <10 minutes in the car, little tesco in Birstall is 5 mins away. good selection of shops and takeaways and a post office in Birstall.
There is also 2 doctors surgeries in the town and the hospital at Dewsbury is only 10 mins away.

yes The traffic around Batley station area is pretty terrible a lot of the time too.
I was commuting Birstall to Batley (quite near the station) and it was only taking me 10 minutes around 8am.
Birstall has a lot going for it and would be close enough to where you'd be working.

Many thanks for the replies. I think I have enough to go on for now. Next step is to visit the area and see what it is like.

125K for a nice 3-bed semi with outside space...very tempting...in South London you can't get a broom cupboard for that!

I live up the road in Birkenshaw and it's a very nice area/village, and so is Gomersal, as above. Both minutes away so worth looking into as well. I only really go to Batley to nip to the Tesco but it seems nice enough. Seems to be a fair few of us around here!

I'd recommend Birkenshaw/Gomersal over Birstall tbh.
Probably a slightly nicer area, but a bit more expensive houses wise I'd think.
I actually walked past that house in Birstall linked earlier the other day, decent area and fairly quiet too.
Time for a local PH meet/beer somewhere around here?

Batley is twinned with Royston Vasey

Lived in Gommersal and that's fine ....I keep my race car in Birkenshaw and it's a pretty good place as well both close to each other Not too far from Leeds or Bradford + good motorway access

If you walked past that house you walked past mine!
The TVR was in the garage so it wouldnt have been obviously a PHers house.

A beer certainly sounds like a good idea!
It's a small world, never realised I was passing another Pher.

Let's cut to the chase. If you're Pakistani you'll have no problem living in Batley. If you're white and non-Pakistani there's a 99.9% likelihood that you'll hate it. Batley, Dewsbury, Ravensthorpe, Huddersfield and Halifax are just extensions of Bradford.

Wow, racist generalisations there!

^^ Very narrow minded there.

There are many races in the towns you quote, Huddersfield has a high polulation who were Afro Caribean, so I think they would be offended at being labeled "Pakistani"

There are also many white parts to those towns too, Ilkley is part of Bradford and look at Hebden Bridge in Halifax.

PS I was born in Batley and would live there, but would choose my area carefully, like in any other place.
