A few days ago my misses and I had a conversation about this.
Her daughter works for a company who train doctors.

Returning from Glasgow we saw a shoe, this started the conversation, why, you see one shoe on the side of the road.
According to daughter, when you die, a foot shrinks.
So, the shoes you see on the road are from the deceased.

It was brought up again at the dinner table tonight, I don't believe this whatsoever.

If this isn't the reason then what is???

When I were a lad, some 'mates' threw my shoes, individually, out of the bus window. And I'm still not dead (well from the neck down) smile
It's my mates wot don it.

So the foot shrinks, I suppose that could happen.

It doesn't explain why there are shoes by the side of the road really though, does it?

How the hell do they get from the foot of the deceased to the side of the road? confused Is someone taking shoes from the dead?

I hit a boot on my motorcycle which caused me to crash. The sole was coming off, and it was obviously discarded from a vehicle window.

This makes perfect sense to me. Driver dies while driving. Foot shrinks. Shoe falls off and exits vehicle and ends up on the side of road. Not sure why everyone would be confused by this?

Left on car roof, thrown from window, left by paramedics after collecting a body from the side of the road, discarded by mafia to hide evidence from their victims.....

Feet contain alot of bones, cant see them shrinking that much...

Brilliant explanation! It's obvious when you break it down like this. hehe

In all seriousness in the vast majority of biker fatalities I've dealt with at least one shoe often comes off due to the force of the impact.

They are normally collected and returned with the body though so I wouldn't have thought any shoes you've seen lying in the carriageway belong to a deceased person.

There's a tree alongside the a66 just past Bowes, it's covered in pairs of shoes.

Obviously no relevance here, so cool starry bro etc etc.

It's Foxes, apparently. They love a good shoe but can't get them past a central reservation.

My brother left his new expensive shoes on the roof of his car while packing his gym kit in the car, like you do, and he forgot about them, when he got home he realised what he had done and went to find them, he found them in the road and they had suffered badly, filthy, broken backs, they were flat as a pancake!
He took them back to the shop and said the backs had broken and he got a new pair.lol
