EU to ban menthol cigarettes & packs of 10
Discussion
I didn't see this posted anywhere.

It will also affect rolling tobacco to raise the minimum from 12.5g to 20g pouches.
The packs of 10/rolling baccy change will come into effect by 2016 and the ban on menthol's by 2022.
Thoughts? I think it's a good move as I found it quite staggering that 4,000 British children take up smoking every week.
Could sell some menthol's on the old grey market in a few years too.

I think it's about the most hypocritical thing this government does. Making billions off the tobacco industry & yet pretending to care about the smokers with all the warnings on packets/anti-smoking bulls
t they come up with. If you're so concerned, why not just ban it outright? Ah that's right, you'd be financially screwed and there would most likely be riots (assuming the smokers have enough puff in them to make it onto the streets!)

Surely that's trying to save the economy by allowing the cost of living for the consumer to continue to increase?Anyway, yay ban menthol fags. If you wanna smoke, do it like you mean it, pleb.
I say allow humans to smoke freely (we've been doing it for thousands of years) but deny all access to any free healthcare from the after effects and allow any non-smoker to legally impose any punishment they choose should a smoker infect their environment with the toxins.
Vote for a better fairer world. Vote me.

I must admit as a pipe smoker I'll be bit pissed off if I lost sweet tobacco, but menthols, seriously? I remember smoking at 12 years old and I don't remember anyone touching them. Where the hell has the supporting data come from?

Current plans by Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to class e-cigarettes as medicinal products could now be overturned by the EU decision.

“We believe these products need to be regulated as medicines and will continue to make this point during further negotiations.”

before. Maybe I should get a white Persian cat... What exactly is your problem with ecigs? Moral stand my arse.
From what you've said, I'd guess you decided to light up your pipe in protest at colleagues being allowed to exhale steam whilst intaking nicotine in the office.
Did you get all indignant when the receptionist used patches to quit? Or the accounts chap used nicotine gum?
Be glad that the ruling is being overturned - would seem very straightforward to argue that if everything containing nicotine had to be licensed as a medicine, cigarettes would need to be too. Except there's no hope they'd pass testing, unlike ecigs/patches/gum/inhalers.

a lot of people think e-cigs are pointless. Or maybe they do have their uses...

Indeed, mine permits me to overcome the latent issues caused by my mother not breastfeeding. Saved me a fortune, not just due to stopping smoking but also therapist bills.
I'm not too fussed about others views of ecigs/patches/menthol fags. I'm just happy I've found something that has ended a 15 year habit that was effecting my health. Different for everyone of course, but having tried pretty much everything else, they've worked for me.
Now I'm gradually reducing my nicotine intake until it reaches zero.

I understand why people start smoking (peer pressure). I understand why it takes time/effort/will power/failed attempts to get off them. What I don't understand are people who defend their "right" to smoke.
Come with me and see some of the patients I see with a whole list of problems caused by smoking: people who's lives (by their own admission) is more or less over by the time they are in their 60s (and sometimes their 50s) because they....just...can't...breath! And still they smoke.
Well done to any who have got off the cigs onto ecigs. Just don't stay on them!

ts I have ever come across. And I work in pharmaceuticals so the bar is pretty f
king low.The brief for the adult dummies, or eCigs, was to produce a product which had the perception of being a healthier alternative to smoking. It was to be expensive, highly addictive, and still would cause long term health problems including cancer (but that was just a side effect of course). It would be given a variety of flavours. Unofficially this was to further attract younger people to the market. It would also allow smokers to subvert legislation designed to help them stop smoking.
I refused to work on the project on the basis that I had known of their dealings with this company and had said from the get go I wouldn't help this product get to market. I nearly lost my job just when the recession was the worst. Obviously since I've been gagged and threatened with legal action should I mention the company we had the contract with. I then was all but forced to resign. You can make your own conclusions but I can assure you it was not an easy decision.
The cessation products a primarily sold to help facilitate the lapse back into smoking by the same f
kers who will sell you cigarettes in the first place. You know this. They have problem helped thousands, but at the same time they will prevent hundreds of thousands from actually quitting. My issue is not with people smoking. It's a bad choice but it's their choice. My issue is that these weird and wonderful new ways of smoking are unregulated, have come into the market under false pretenses, and are deliberately manipulating the young and ignorant, under the guise of being a healthier alternative.
Incidentally, the regulations for medical devices, which presumably these would fall under, are more complicated that that. An pharmacological active ingredient alone is not sufficient to make it a medical device. You can go and read up on the MHRA website. There's no reason why a pragmatic solution could not be found as the legislation is very flexible.

There's a lovely bit of Newspeak for you."Force", "badger", "harass", "nag", "inconvenience", "irritate", I could go for, but "help"?
Ultimately I smoke for pleasure and find the increasingly complex laws a nuisance, but ultimately what is the government incentive if not to help? After all, they make millions in revenue from the tax on tobacco, although difficult to calculate it is likely to be higher than the cost of treatment, why force people to stop unless it is ultimately for their benefit?
It boils down to the classic argument individual freedoms versus social responsibilities. A topic far too complex to be debated here, and one that isn't the point of discussion.

Out of interest how are the eCigs bad for you if they don't contain the harmful elements of cigarettes (the tar mainly, but also the thousands of other chemicals that are produced from burning tobacco?).
Primarily nicotine. But there are many contaminants, contrary to what the ignoramous above is saying the exhaled vapour isn't just steam either. It's also a mixture of the following:Acetaldehyde (MS)
Benzene (SS)
Cadmium (MS)
Formaldehyde (MS,SS)
Isoprene (SS)
Lead (MS)
Nickel (MS)
Nicotine (MS, SS)
N-Nitrosonornicotine (MS, SS)
Toluene (MS, SS)

Surprised this isn't brought up more as people (including me) say it's just water vapour and nicotine expelled.
