If you manage to keep your nose clean, not surprising. Once you've passed your test, there's not any requirement to produce it for anything. I'm not sure if they're held on a data base the same as insurance details though.

I think it would be harder and harder to do, unless you deliberately set out to avoid getting caught by insuring it in someone else's name. Otherwise its surely only a matter of time until the ANPR cameras catch you?

Obviously not!

Quite ridiculous that someone can go for 40 years without so much as a producer. Though saying that theres nothing to say that he hasnt been stopped at some time and simply gave a false name and didnt show up.

Maybe with the Police able to check the MID, stories like this will become more frequent?

Perhaps he's been driving a car that belonged to his wife or whatever, and was passing the ANPR because of that

I know a man who didn't have one for years. He has one now.

It dates back to the 1970s. He worked for the family business and apparently it started with him as a teenager being asked to shift trucks and vans around the yard.

His dad was very much a muck to brass type of chap and made his son work up the ladder in the business. Eventually - late 1970s - he got promoted into the office and he was given a company car.

That's when the "oversight" was spotted. He was sent to BSM, passed then sent on I guess things like HGV courses etc.

I guess it was differnet times, but the implications of no insurance and a guy driving cars vans trucks etc with no training etc does not bear thinking about.

Thanks to heavy reliance on ANPR and very few actual Police Officers this is probably easier now than ever.
As long as the vehicle is road legal and not infringing any traffic laws it's never going to be stopped or queried in any way.

Is it? Why? I think the last time I was stopped was about 1993.

How often are you stopped, and more pertinently, what for?

I was stopped many times in the first 7 or 8 years of driving.
Some was because I was young and thought it OK to speed through villages at 3am returning from my girlfriends house... Also my cars were cheap and looked like st so would get the "your brake lights dont work" when they did. When I finally got a nice car it was too nice for a 21 year old (MK2 RS2000 in signal yellow) so kept getting stopped by every traffic cop my side of the M1.
Then I got my only ever speeding ticket in mu Mk2 Cortina Lotus, one writing the ticket, the other admiring the job I'd done on the car...... Had a few stops on my bikes, but no tickets.

Think Ive been driving about 26 years and not been stopped in the last 12.

The AMPR system simply detects whether a car is registered to someone who is insured and is taxed. There's no way of knowing if the person driving it at the time has a licence and insurance. If policing is done entirely by men sitting in vans pointing gadgets at people this will become ever more commonplace.

But if a car isn't insured they'll pull it to find out who was driving, almost bound to get stopped. A radio call shows the car changed ownership (say) 2 years ago and has never been insured since. They can check with a radio call on the licence too, so given the person is driving an uninsured car and there is no record of them holding a licence its not looking good is it ?

Been driving for 22 years. I average about 15K a year with no producers, no speeding points and no stops. I can see someone going 40 years.

The articles don't really mention whether he has been caught before, the articles seem to be the product of a police officer's comment on Twitter, the guy could have said "I've been driving without a licence for 40 years! (I've only been caught five times)"

edit: But yes, I agree with the general sentiment that it is easier than ever to get away with it so long as the vehicle itself doesn't generate any ANPR pings. That could be either by having a relative register/insure it, or by cloning a known-good vehicle (and keeping tabs on that vehicle's legality!).

I did not have to give a drivers license number to get insurance. With insurance and an MOT you can get VED, at that point other than not having the requisite permit to drive your motor is pretty legal on the roads. I passed my Test in the 70's, never been stopped, never been asked to produce.

They had a bit of an amnesty in Ireland during the 70s where anyone that had been driving could come in, pay a pound and leave with a licence.

My grandmother had never driven in her life at this stage for various reasons but my grandfather picked one up for her when getting his own.

She started driving in the 80s to the shop once a week. Bought a little Fiesta and did 150 miles per annum in it.

About 20 years ago I used to drink with a guy whos uncle also used to drink at the pub. Every Saturday afternoon he would sink a skinful and drive home early evening. I asked how the hell this guy had not lost his licence. The other guy replied that he couldn't lose a licence he never had.

This guy was about 50 and had been driving for a long time.

Paper license, won't be on database i suspect. Car would appear on MID as it is insured.

Never been stopped in a car ever, last producer would have been around 1985 when we all used to rag round town on mopeds and 125s.

Off topic but i got my first ever speeding ticket this year, sent off license and got it back hand written on. Suspect this will not be on database too.
