Budget: Less than £80
Usage: Holiday snaps, with a preference for a slim camera
Store: Ideally from Argos or Currys (as I need it at short notice, i.e. next 2 days)
Thoughts so far: Canon Powershot A2500, Nikon Coolpix S3500, Sony DSCW730

Any advice will be most appreciated

Before someone comes in to say use your phone, I'll try to be more objective; you'll still find good reviews of those and another such cameras at this price range, have a look for some on those you're able to get.

Don't worry about image and ISO tests etc. in those reviews, doesn't make that much difference at this end of the market (although some will perform better in low light for example). Just look at the disadvantages against your requirements.

Thanks, I know it is the bottom end of the market but I have a Fujifilm bridge camera and will probably invest in a DSLR next year, but I don't want something so bulky to take on holiday.

I'd look at things like the type of batteries it takes, rechargables are ok but will you be able to re-charge the camera while on holiday? Normal batteries are ok but tend to run down quick so you may need plenty but you can usually find normal batteries everywhere.

The Nikon does seem to get good reviews. Any other thoughts? Planning to buy one this evening / tomorrow.

I actually thought the Panasonic was one of the weaker choices. The Optical zoom is inferior to the others and it requires MicroSD storage meaning having to purchase new media cards. Can you expand on why you would pick this over the Nikon or indeed a Canon IXUS 132 or A3500?

I just like Lumix cameras. From experience in the past, they've always just been much better than the competition in operation and image quality (compared to other like for like compacts). Never been a fan of Nikon or Canon compacts.

This was the better looking of the 2 lumix cameras Argos offer in your price range. That's the only reason I picked it smile Plus it's nice and slim to fit in a pocket. The Nikon and the Canon both look like they were made by Fisherprice.

Zoom isn't everything. How often are you likely to be using the tele end of the zoom? In a daily shooter, the 24mm wide angle will be far more useful. The Nikon and the Canon offer 26mm and 28mm respectively. 2-4mm different might not sound much but it will be much appreciated when trying to shoot landscapes or cityscapes etc. Even groupshops.

As for the Mini SD cards, well yes, you will need to buy one, but then it's more future proof than sticking with SD cards. New cameras are all switching to Mini SD now.

^ this was the other one offered in your price range. Doesnt look as nice but takes a regular SD card and appears to have the same lens (same spec anyway) as the camera I previously linked to.

^ up your budget a touch and you get the zoom you lust for and it can still go wider than the Nikon or Canon, just not as fast at the wide lens as the other 2 cameras but then faster at the Tele end.

Swings and round abouts really. At this price point, they'll all perform pretty much the same. Just depends what features you want and what you'll actually use. Operation is more important than zoom spec in a point and shoot IMO. If it has a menu system you hate or terrible shutter lag then you'll hate using it. I've always liked the menu systems and interface on Lumix cameras. But that's just me smile
