The man was a through and through competitor. He fought for every second, every place.
Do you think he'd want to be 'given' the title? - No.
Let it play out, the chap is already a legend - IMHO.

This.

If the other competitors engineer it themselves for Sean to win then that is fine but to not let them have that chance is wrong.

Motorsport is dangerous and sadly these things happen.

No support from me either. I doubt Mr. Edwards would have wanted a title gifted to him and it's hardly fair to the other competitors to be getting no points when they might be fighting for other positions in the championship.

I hardly think anyone's going to feel great about the season end, whoever ends up being champion. I'm sure they'd all much rather have Sean there to fight with.

Did James Hunt let Niki Lauda win despite him missing a few races? Or even when Niki retired from the last race because he felt it was too dangerous?

No, he went on and won it.

It's terrible news about Edwards but I really don't think gifting him the title will make any difference now. It's not going to make things any easier for his family, it's just a stupid trophy at the end of the day.

Why? He was a racer through and through, I can't imagine anyone wanting to win a title as a gift.

Already commented in 'tother thread in Motorsports.
IMO, noone wants to win a title based on facebook. If he wins it postumously, he's a legend.
That's fine, but he's already a legend, win or lose. "Letting people win" just devalues the whole lot, and I can't believe Sean would have any interest in it.

Ask any top flight competitor - there is no satisfaction whatsoever in beating somone who wasn't a challenge. Do you think Toyota care whether they beat Rebellion? Of course not. They only look at Audi. Sean Edwards only got to where he was by beating the best, and so beating the midfielders because the best stopped trying will not add to the man's legacy.

PS - OP - the fact that 6500 poeple have signed a petition doesn't prove a thing, 40,000 mouthbreathers a week sign e-petitions to abolish child hunger, but that's based on bugger all as well. The only people who's opinions really count are Seans family, and the racers he's competing with. IMO the best solution is for everyone to try as hard as normal, and if he loses due to non attendance, a suitable dedication / speech from the winner. If he wins anyway (fairytale ending), then even better.

How many of them even knew who he was, let alone cared who won before it popped up on facebook, twitter etc?

Sad that people so keenly turn someone else's tragedy into a personal cause. Does anyone know what his or his families wishes actually were? Shouldn't that be respected first and foremost, rather than a bunch of people who didn't know him and have no business orchestrating anything on his behalf?

It's fairly obvious to anyone who looks at the results, or any of the comments from people throughout the sport who knew him how good he was - I don't think a title is going to change anyone's feelings or memories of him as a racer and a person, which is surely the most important thing of all.

It just has the potential to make the whole thing incredibly awkward and unpleasent for the organisers and other drivers who have to race in bad enough circumstances without a braying internet mob trying to dictate the results.
Very well said.

I've tried to be diplomatic so far but really these facebook petitions have a ring of the frenzy that took place in the school playground when Kurt Cobain killed himself; a load of teenagers suddenly finding themselves inconsolable but unable to recount a single song title. Bit sad really.

He was leading by 18 points, had 3 wins out of 7 races and hadn't finished lower than 5th.

If his nearest competitor were to win both races at the final round, Sean would only need to match his worst finish so far (5th) and the championship would still go to him.

In my opinion, I think the last round should be points free so Sean wins.
The fact that 6500 people think differently means absolute zero, as does your opinion.

Honestly, taking all emotions out, its completely NOT in the spirit of competition to gift him the win.

As are you although i think yours is way way off base, no racer worth his salt would agree to that.
Ok so 6500 agree but that's nowthiing compaired to those who have not signed, remind me again how many people are on FB ?
TBH i think the title woould be sullied by this idea as would the memory of a great racer.

As said in the other thread, if other teams/drivers want to back off so they don't take the title, that's up to them, but I don't really agree with this idea. Why would some teams bother turning up if it was a non points scoring event? It's just the way it is, I don't think gifting someone a championship is the best way of honouring them.

I started this post for the right reasons, if people don't share my opinion that's fine, it looks like I am a minority on here.
No hard feelings. People have their own options, you can't argue with that...
