How can rail operators justfy their ****ing fares?

I travel from Rugby to Euston every day nearly. Costs me nearly £8k for a Virgin season ticket

I don't want to live any nearer London. I cant justify the stupid house prices and have my own personal reasons such as family and all that bks.

I am lucky my job apparently pays me well . But fk me are we being ripped off in this country or what? Bend over and lube up and take it up the arse as always.

Less than an hour for £600+ a month. I lived in Austria for a year in 2008, I would happily pay for their rail transport as its brilliant.

So whats gonna give? Seriously? The transport is fked in this country....

So that's 170 miles, 5 days a week, around 47 weeks a year, which works out at 40,000 miles, there or thereabouts. 20p a mile all in really isn't that bad - try running a car on that (especially with parking in central London) and see how you go.

Austrians are also taxed at 50% on earnings over £30k.
They also have a mere 5000 kms of railway to look after compared to the UK's 31500 kms. Obviously it's gonna be easier to run the former. It's also only got to ferry 8.5 million people around. The London Underground network alone carries that many in one day sometimes.
So yeah, Austria is so much better. But nothing like equal.

8 quid sounds quite cheap to me. I libe in Hemel and it's 12.90 return and not much less for a single.

Rugby to euston is ~85miles... Can't do that for 8 quid in a car.

So how much do you have to earn before taxes just for getting to and from work?

Could make a job closer to home the better choice. Especially if you value your time.

I think you answered your own question. You can't afford to live in London but need to work there so supply and demand dictates the rail ticket prices...

Some weeks I work in London 2 or 3 times

What annoys me is from Southampton to waterloo some days I have to stand going both ways, rare to stand going up, but it does happen

For this I have to pay 75.30

Oh and the car park is £13!


I know it's not as simple as just adding more carriages, but it's been over subscribed for years

Bournemouth to London (about 110 miles each way) was just under £700 a month, but that included the underground pass.

Aside from the time taken to commute -2.5hours each way-, the prive was too much, so I stay up in London Sunday night to Friday night in a house share. This works out to be around £450 a month, plus I walk to work so no other travel costs.

I did use 406 hdi for the weekly commute, but that failed its MOT. So now the hunt is on for another diesel snotter.

what makes it worse is that the government is still subsidizing the railway to the tune of 6.8p per passenger mile (average), so in effect us non-train users are making it cheaper for you to use the train through taxes.
