Anyone using it on 500 ??

When I let MA work his magic next year I fully intended to upgrade the following ..

Induction hose to smooth bore
Larger throttle body (want to retain original plenum)
New AFM
Trumpet base
Chip

Whilst looking at the variables amongst all of this I was looking around the ignition side of things as if I'm going to pay so much for induction and mao tweaks it seems foolish not to invest equally in ignition goodies aswell.

So I was considering the Unalite kit as it comes with Ballast Resistor and coil ....

Any views or comments ???

Don't know the Unalite ignition.
What budget are you looking at Johno if ££££ then ask Mark about a fully mapped Omex system.

You're talking arounf £300 - £500 for Unalite with coil and resistor etc.......

I'm not bothered about having a fully remappable system as this is further than I want to go.

I just want to make sure the kit that is on the engine is better than standard.

Mark Tornado chip will allow the map to be altered as you well know, I just want to make sure I am making the most of that map.

OK then, still son't know what this replacemetn system is capable of. However if it is an improvement over standard in the advance curve area then yes it may be worth having IMHO.
The main draw back IMHO with the standard system is once all the advance is in and where it comes in determines what Mark can get out of it. The full advance on the standard Lucas can differ from car to car and be anywhere from 2.5K to 4K rpm (ish). You can get the standard weights altered slightly to delay the advance curve a bit which may help some cars.
Bottom line though any mechanical advance such as seen on the standard system is a major limiting factor to the final output of the lump IMHO.
Again I would speak to Mark about this before you go down the road. I will bet that whatever you are looking at he will have mapped a car with it, he will be able to tell you in very short order whether in his experience it is worth doing.

Bigger sparks, better combustion etc .... it would have to be the Unalite rather than the dual point. I do not have your knowledge of set up, have a read, see what you think.

In use we found that that the system needs to use the additional active power filter #29351 approx 30$ as the module is delicate

Adrian,

Thanks for that, but what is it, what does it do and why is it delicate ...

I know I'm demanding

The APF stops the module from burning out ..which can happen if you leave the ignition on whilst working on other items without running the car. Prior to fitting the APF we would disconnect the module even to leave the car on trickle charge. ( 2 modules later...87$) .....the car had a dual points system prior to that and the Mallory is 100% better otherwise

Although it looks like the amount of total advance is adjustable I’m not sure you could get the right shape curve that you would get with a fully mapable system, the existing distributor should be able to be modified to adjust total advanced and curve by playing with the weights and springs, might be worth looking at costs of that.

You’d need to see how long it would take to set this system up on the rollers and compared it to the Omex cost and set up times to get the total costs and gains for each.

Omex system is going to set you back 2k .... The difficulty I have with fully mappable systems is finding people who can play with it a couple of years down the line etc ...Look at the aggro Mr Gotts has with his Motec system.

He has the disks, but trying to find a person who can alter it is a nightmare.

I want to improve on the existing ignition without compromising too much the originality of the engine, therefore I am looking at improved parts without fundamentally changing the system.

Again, I come back to the fact that I am after a well set up engine with components that will maintain that state of tune, not a fully mappable system that really demands several other upgrades to really take advantage of it, read triple throttles etc ..

Is it as much as that? I thought the basic ignition-only OMEX hardware was in the region of £500. I guess it will take time and money to set up, but hopefully not £1500 worth.

About £1K at present and not quiet there myself . To be fair it was a first for this installation and lots of lessons have been learnt at my wallets expense me thinks .

A decent Bosch coil is good enough with a set of Magnecor leads. General opinion is the extra for the Mallory would be better spent elswhere.

fit one if you have a problem.

not sure if its necessary otherwise, but the dizzies are know to be a weak area.

mine currently has the vacuum off, meaning i'm losing a bit of mid range and peak as a compromise (but not much truth be known 2bhp?)

worth doing i suppose if you have the cash and prior to the set up.

and lots of money on ignition WON'T make anything significant on a GOOD standard system, but will allow you to make the most of the mid-range and thats where it REALLY matters!!

I run mine without the vac connected as it drives like a kangaroo at 30-40 mph with it connected. It has no effect appart from fuel economy at cruise, i can live with that as i can poodle along at 30 mph in fifth,if i wish.
