I have been offered a Chimaera 400 engine modified to Stage 2. So far there is no paperwork to indicate exactly what work has been done but I have no reason to disbelieve the seller, who also doesn't know.
I realise Stage 2 is a loose term to cover different engine mods but what would the minimum work you would expect to be carried out to be able to claim it's Stage 2?
I will be able to test drive the engine in the next few days.
Thanks for your input.

Stage 2 generally refers to porting work on the heads.

Have a look here for an explanation - its under the technical section about 'head porting'.

Stage 2 on this site is I think the 'phantom heads'.

So, similar to the 430 in that respect.

I'm not sure abot the 430.

however Stage 2 heads is not a bad thing on a 400 especially if the trumpet base and inlet manifold have been polished and matched to the stage 2 heads. Anything that gets gases in and out quickly is a good thing.

If you have an oppertunity to test drive then a comparison with yours would be usefull.

Trouble is, if it has a 15-20 bhp hike it won't be very noticable!

If no one knows exactly what's been done I would take it as it's not scratchchin and if it has then it's a bonus you can lick round the ports on these engines and call it Stage 2 or stage this and that confused far as I am concerned you have ported stock valved heads, ported bigger valve, and Ported ultra big valve there you have all 3 and for the racer ultimate ported with the biggest vales some may call stage 4 rolleyes for the car you speak of if the paper work is not backing this up just take it for hearsay frown

But why would you also believe him?.. If he can’t prove it, it’s a stock unit until he can… and priced accordingly.

Buyer beware and all that wink

At the moment I have given him the benefit of the doubt because has had a basic 4 litre and says this one is significantly faster. Once I can test drive it I will be able to come to my own conclusion.

I thought we were talking about 400 engines and not British women's tennis scores. tongue out

I wouldn't have thought a pair of ported standard heads would have made that much difference, unless as has been said before, the entire induction system has been modified and a better cam to allow the air in to make a 400 "significantly" quicker than standard. It may be that the other one he has driven was knackered and its easy to say "its stage 2".
Treat it as standard and if it is quicker than a standard then that's a bonus
