Hi guys.

On the way back from work today, I saw a police car wait on a medium-sized roundabout (it looks as if theres a parking spot paved specifically for them!), in between two stretches of dual carriageway. This isn't the first time I've seen them there, I just wondered what they actually do there?

The second I see a police vehicle, I always think "they're checking for speeding cars" but from where it was parked, its impossible to do that as everyone slows down at the roundabout anyway

Or it could be the police have evidence that there has been an unusual amount of crashes on said round about an they are being proactive at trying to catch the scamming ***ts in the act!

Such activity *could* lead to less crash for cash events and if we really stretch the imagination cheaper car insurance premiums.

It could also be ANPR and them trying to get rid of untaxed/uninsured cars.

I'm struggling to see any negatives.

I'd imagine this, if not then they'll just be increasing visibility. Just showing that there's a police presence does wonders - can't get much better visibility than the middle of a roundabout.

They will quite often wait if there is evidence of something interesting coming down the duel carriageway. Could be anything from a stolen car to drugs intel. Once you are on a DC its very hard to hide, and being at a roundabout all bases are covered.

Does the roundabout have a lane through it with gates?

Most likely explanation. Instead of customers from one road that it being patrolled, roundabouts bring together a number of roads and more perps.

Intel. They'll know that certain 'wanted' car will pass them at that time of day based on past intelligence reports.

Or ANPR. Police sit on the roundabout at Baginton on the A45/A46 at Coventry with ANPR cameras pointed at the road. If triggered, they can pounce very quickly.
