In the past year I have seen about six cars basically blow up on dual carriage ways / motorways, including a 13 plate Astra that was spitting oil and smoke, and an old Astra van that actually went up in flames. The others were a new-ish Smart car, a Renault Traffic, a Mercedes A Class and an X5.

This seems to be a recent phenomenon - in the previous ten years, I'd seen maybe 2.

Two of these cars didn't stop - two months ago on the A1 I was behind an X5 that suddenly erupted with thick black and blue smoke, burning rubber smell and, eventually, flames licking up the sides. It was in lane 1, I passed it (quickly) in lane 3, as I passed there was a family in there seemingly completely oblivious to what was going on.

Are people really so stupid that they will continue to drive a car that is on fire, with their kids sat in the back? And what has led to this sudden increase in peoples cars combusting? Skimping on maintenance maybe? Or am I alone in seeing more exploding cars?
