Yokohama AD08

Just looking for some advice about new tyres. We're looking at Yoko AD08s as replacements for the PS2s currently on the car, they seem a good road tyre which can take a decent amount of track use - they've certainly been great on my car.

The only problem is that the speed rating of the tyres front and rear is only W, which is 168mph. There's every possibility the car might exceed this speed on trips abroad next year - do you think the speed rating carries much significance? They seem to be very popular in the US on 996 GT3s with no issues reported. Also, do you think there would be potential issues with insurance, seeing as the OE tyres are Y rated to 186mph?

There could be potential problems with your insurance company so best to contact them and ask. When I fitted winter tyres that are W rated my insurance company were fine with it, but make sure you get that in writing just in case.

The new AD08R is available now too so probable a better all round bet.

I've run the AD08 on both road & track on my GT3 without any problems - this includes forays up to 175mph . They are definitely superior to the PS2 in the dry. There's plenty of tread depth (8mm IIRC) and they wear well too. The AD08 has a good balance between wet & dry grip but be aware that it feels very floaty on the front hitting deep standing water over about 95mph.

They are a great tyre and are pretty highly rated wherever you go on the net. A tyre blowout at 170+ isn't on the 'to do' list though, which is why I thought I'd ask! Might give Yokohama a call to see why the speed rating is lower than pretty much all other tyres in this class.

Wth regards to wet performance, going a bit floaty over standing water at almost a tonne is certainly much more acceptable than what would happen with cups in a similar situation!

Are you thinking of AO48? They're the ones you don't want on the motorway in a downpour.

I ran AD08's at VMax & did lots of runs at 180-190+ with no issues. I ran higher than standard pressures but thats all. They also perform very well as a trackday/ fast road tyre & as yet no aquaplaning, but that clearly depends on the volume/ depth of waster & speed.

Cold pressures 7 psi below recommended pressures, but then checked pressure & carcass temp when hot (using handheld IR gun).

I ran them 32F / 35R hot on track. Run close to those pressures cold for the road & you should be fine.

Mind sharing where you ordered from and how much?

Does the R replace the regular AD08 or is it in addition to?

The R just signifies a compound change, they supercede the old AD08s.

No I'm local to them and know a couple of them in there. I get in there quite often and I bought some R888's and a set of Trofeo's, but I'd be interested to see what you think of the A08R's? They told me in December that size wasn't going to be available until early this year but didn't have a date.

I used AD08 tyres, recommended to me by Demon Tweeks as it happens, on my Mk2 Golf track car. They were superb in the wet and dry, both on road and on track. Great value compared to R888s and AO48s IMHO and offering 85-90% of the performance. They also last a lot longer too!!

I have them on my MX5 and they're a great tyre - done 7 track days so far, and reckon they've still got another couple left in them before they need changing!
