Helping a mate source a car at the moment, and we were talking about the cars that simply refuse to die. Ever.

He used to have a Toyota Carina with the 7AFE Engine. Got bored before it broke and only sold it as company rules prevented him from running it daily. This car STILL taunts him, and the guy who bought it has cleared 260k.

Same goes for my old 3SFE Avensis. I ran this without service for three years, going 100-170k without a grumble. The poor old thing was running with no oil showing on the stick for (I reckon) 4 months. Still rattling along.

Boss cleared 240k in his 1999 2.0 Accord.

What do you put in the Unborkable Hall of Fame? "Tough as old boots no nonsense get on and do it motoring" ?

Volvo 740 GL estate. My suppliers in Poland had one that had done 600,000km on the original engine and box. They sold it. It's still going strong 5 years later.

We had a Citroen c5 at work as a pool car, it got absolutely thrashed for 160000 miles, with only bare minimum servicing. It never broke down. The aircon and cd player stopped working but it still drove fine. Was a spongey old beast but just kept going long after its ford and vw stablemates had been auctioned off.

Guy I know has one, & an 850 of some description. Still uses the 850 for work every day (carpet fitter) & they refuse to die. Thought the 850 started sounding rough in the summer but it was just the exhaust starting to come away from the manifold so it's still going strong now it's fixed.

As an aside my old man had a c class merc from new (n reg) & despite minimal servicing & best efforts it just kept on going, until of course he loaned me it while in between cars & the ecu blew making repair unecinomical after if only had it 2 weeks (1 of which I was on bloody holiday!).

The cockroach of the car world. You could cut its head off and it would still drive for two weeks until it starved of petrol.

Mine is now off the road after some serious body rust and some even more serious abuse around farm tracks resulted in the panhard rod snapping off the rear axle.

To solve the grumbling/banging noise i tied the rod to a dump truck and drove off at speed ripping the mountings off the body.

These seems to of had very little effect on the way it drives on its monthly 3 mile thrash across some farm tracks to pick up some straw for the chickens.

When people say their car is a shed very rarely do they mean it. This car is a shed as it is where i store all the bedding for the chickens

Except they're all suffering from terminal rust.

My mate's Yaris didn't give up the ghost until well over 200k and I reckon it would still be with us today if it had been shown the smallest amount of tlc between MOTs.

ETA. My old MX mechanic's Landcruiser had covered over 300k with nothing more than regular servicing and consumables required and know of another on over 500k...original clutch, the lot...

A guy at a place I worked at yonks back had an old Astramax diesel van. I think it was something like a 1.9 n/a. He was given a promotion and the boss said he could have a better company car, but the old one had to wear out first. 'Lurch' (as he was known) thought he would force the boss's hand a little and drained all the oil from his (dis)Astra.

I left the company about 6 months later and Lurch was mightily pee'd off as the thing was still going strong ....

quite easy to kill actually, the blocks on the 6x range all went porous which just about killed the Ford tractor brand on its own because Ford refused to acknowledge the problem until it was too late. The rest of the tractor is/was very robust

Two nominations:

W202 Mercedes C-Class - bought at just shy of 100K miles, sold at 170K miles to a friend, now heading in the region of 260k miles - M112 triple valve V6 - corker of an engine. The odd spot of rust aside, the W202 was a great car.

Subaru Legacy 3.0Rn (with the chain timed flat six), these really are strong vehicles - bought at ±60K miles, now passing 140K miles, apart from consuming oil at 1l/1,5K miles it seems content to keep plodding on.

Volvo 850, look no further. They really don't make 'em like that any more, I had an M reg (1995) T5R approaching 200k on the clock, not a spot of rust on or under it, original turbo, engine, clutch the lot - frankly excellent car, I want another but I have two cars and can't justify a third.

I know someone whose had a Fourtrak for 5 years. Bought from a ropey estate in Swansea, no service history, scrapes on just about every panel when he bought it. In 5 years it has never been serviced, all of the money instead being spent on off-roading accessories and upgrades. Had a run-in with the central reservation of the M4 after a 70mph blow-out. Has been rolled at least twice when green-laning. Was stolen by scrotes who attempted to set fire to it. Did a 20,000 mile a year country lane commute come rain or shine.

Don't think it has broken down at any point apart from once when it failed to start after the M4 incident, and that was only due to rain leaking into the damaged intake through a crease in the bonnet that made a perfect gutter.

My other half has bought one of these a week ago, same as the pic but has had 17 shades of st kicked out of it. The fker has spent nearly the past week in with my friendly mechanic, the stupid heap can't seem to find second gear. It is also missing the air intake, has more patches than original bodywork, yet the poxy thing is still okay. But it did refuse to start until it had a sprinkle of motion potion dropped in it.

I am hoping that when she has passed her driving test and the little st fails it's next MOT, she will let me kill it. I was thinking of putting it in the microwave.

I own one of the other unborkable motors, the venerable Honda Accord. It has had little maintenance and still drives like a champion.
