968 alarm upgrade - what does it mean?
Discussion
I'm awaiting a new baby, a 968 cabriolet, and am trying to sort insurance. The details on the car state that it has an alarm and immobiliser with a "porsche system 1 alarm upgrade". the dealer says this is an uprated security system and has provided me with the following references:
alarm 999.999.720.02
immobiliser 999.999.795.00
My insurers, Nowell and Richards, want details of the security system and dont seem to recognise the terms Ive been given or the significance (or not) of the reference numbers. THey are asking if it is a Thatcham type alarm, an upgraded alarm, or a standard factory fit system. What should I tell them?

If your 968 has the Porsche alarm/immobiliser type PA2000 with Upgrade, your indicators will flash two times when armed and not four times.
Your insurance company should also recognise this alarm type designation and be sure to state "with upgrade", as this confirms the system as a Thatcham CAT 1 system.
Cheers

thanks for that. I will ask the dealer how many times it flashes!
The waters are even muddier now, since I rang my OPC to ask them, and they said it was an upgrade that was equivalent to a thatcham 2 system. They werent sure if thatcham 1 or 2 was the better one however, and neither am I

First off, congrats on the new car! 968s are quite addictive
AFAIK, Thatcham cat 2 is immobiliser only, 1 is alarm and immobiliser.
The Porsche immobilisers from the mid-90s are classed as cat 2 (the ones where you have to insert a little electronic key before you start the car).
If yours has a remote plipper for the alarm, chances are it's cat 1. If your insurers insist on seeing a certificate, the OPC or an alarm installer may be able to test the system for you. If it conforms to Thatcham specs they can issue a new cert, for a fee of course
